Virginia City is built on the side of a mountain at about 6,200 feet. Streets step up the slope, yards are held by retaining walls, and about 54% of homes were built before 1960 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; a small town, so figures are approximate).
At a glance
- Median home built in 1956, the oldest housing in our service area data
- Terraced lots: access and retaining walls checked first
- Virginia City station: about 46 inches of snow a year
- Wildfire risk to homes higher than 99.4% of US communities
What makes a Virginia City stump hard to reach?
The lot itself. A yard here may be a narrow terrace between an upper wall and a lower one, reached by stairs. The grinder has to get onto that terrace and work without loading the edge of an old wall.
At the estimate the arborist looks at the route from the street, the condition and height of nearby walls, and how close the stump is to them. A stump growing in or against a retaining wall is a special case: its roots may be part of what is holding the wall, and grinding or pulling it can leave a gap. In that situation we may advise cutting it low and leaving it, or bringing in whoever will repair the wall.
What might be under an old lot?
More than on a newer property. A house from the 1950s or earlier has had generations of plumbing and wiring changes, and old lots collect buried things: abandoned pipe, old footings, stone and brick. An 811 request has the utilities mark the lines they own. Everything else is unknown until someone says so. Tell us what you know, and expect the estimate to note that the machine stops if it finds something unexpected.
Winter on the Comstock
The Virginia City weather station averages about 46.4 inches of snow and 11.7 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), more than three times the Carson City station's snowfall, although the town is only about 11 miles from our yard by road. Stump grinding waits for bare, firm ground, and on a north-facing terrace that can take a while. If the tree comes down in winter, the stump can be cut low and scheduled for later on the same estimate.
Firewood town, leftover stumps
About 27% of Virginia City households heat mainly with wood, one of the highest shares in our service area. If you have taken a dead tree down yourself for the woodpile, we will grind the stump you are left with. We do not need to have removed the tree.
Keep chips off the hillside by the house
The USDA Forest Service rates Virginia City's wildfire risk to homes higher than 99.4% of US communities, the highest of any community we serve. A drift of dry grindings below a wooden porch is exactly what fire guidance says to remove: no wood mulch within 5 feet of a building. On most lots here that means hauling the grindings away.

Stump grinding questions in Virginia City
Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.
Can a stump grinder get up the stairs to my Virginia City yard?
It depends on the stairs and the stump. The arborist checks the route during the free estimate and will tell you plainly if a machine cannot reach it.
My stump is growing out of a retaining wall. Can it be ground?
Possibly, but the wall has to be considered first. Roots may be helping hold it, so we may recommend cutting the stump low and leaving it.
Is there a permit for stump grinding in Virginia City?
We have not found a Storey County permit for grinding a stump on private property. If the work is tied to changes to a building or a retaining wall, ask the county first.
How far is Virginia City from your yard?
About 11 miles, about 16 minutes without traffic.
