What is caliche?

Caliche is a hard, whitish layer of soil cemented with calcium carbonate, found in dry climates where there is too little rain to wash minerals out. It can be a few inches to many feet thick, and roots and water cannot pass through it easily.

What it is

Caliche forms over long periods as minerals dissolved in soil water are left behind when the water evaporates. It can look like crumbly white chalk or like a solid rock-hard layer, sometimes called hardpan. Digging a hole in one place and hitting it a foot down is the usual way people discover it.

It is common across the dry West; whether it lies under a particular lot has to be checked at the lot.

Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Roots stop at a hard layer, so a tree over caliche can end up with a shallow root plate, uneven watering and a greater chance of tipping in the wind (see windthrow). The same hard layer is part of why stump holes, root barriers and underground work can be slow on valley lots. The Cooperative Extension landscape guide explains these soil limits for the high desert. See alkaline soil.

Calling 811 before any digging is a separate must-do. See call 811 before stump grinding.

What an arborist does about it

The arborist looks at the tree's root flare and leaning, and listens to what you know about the ground. A tree that is shallow-rooted over a hard layer may be a candidate for removal if it also leans or has dieback. We do not do soil testing; for that, use Extension. See tree roots, sidewalks and sewer lines.

If you hit a white, rock-hard layer while planting or digging a trench, that is the sign. Mention it to the arborist at the estimate, since it affects how roots grow and how some jobs near the ground go.
