# Tree cabling and bracing

Tree cabling and bracing is hardware installed in a tree to support a weak fork or a heavy limb and lower the chance of it splitting. Battle Born Tree Service offers cabling, bracing and stabilization after a certified arborist has assessed whether the tree is a good candidate.

Some trees are built with a flaw: two trunks that grew side by side, a long limb reaching over the roof, a fork that cracked in last winter's snow. Cabling and bracing is how you keep a tree like that when the rest of it is worth keeping.

## What is the difference between cabling and bracing?

They do related jobs in different parts of the tree, and they are often used together.

| | Cabling | Bracing |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A cable set high in the crown between limbs or stems | Rods set through a weak fork or a split |
| What it does | Limits how far the parts can move apart in wind or under snow | Holds the union itself together |
| Typical use | Co-dominant stems, long heavy limbs | A fork that has started to crack |

The guide [cabling and bracing: when it saves a tree](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-cabling-bracing-explained/) goes through each system in more detail.

## Which trees are candidates for cabling?

The arborist is looking for a sound tree with one structural weak point. Common cases:

- Two or more trunks of similar size joined in a tight V
- Bark trapped in the fork, which keeps the wood from knitting together
- A long, heavy limb over a house, a driveway or a patio
- A crack starting at a fork after wind or snow
- A large old tree with real value to the property, where removal is the last resort

Silver maples, Siberian elms and multi-stemmed cottonwoods grow this way often. So do ornamental pears and some ash. Their species pages in the [tree guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/) describe how each tends to fail.

## When is cabling the wrong answer?

Hardware does not fix decay. If the wood at the fork is rotten, if the roots are failing or if most of the crown is dead, a cable only delays the day the tree comes down and may give a false sense of security in the meantime. In those cases the arborist will recommend [removal](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/tree-removal/) and tell you why.

This is also why nobody can promise that a cabled tree will not fail. Support systems lower the risk. They do not remove it, and a supported tree still needs to be looked at from time to time.

## How does cabling fit with storm work?

Tree cabling and stabilization is one of our listed emergency and storm services. After a storm it can hold a damaged tree together. Before one, it is storm damage prevention: the weak fork is supported and the load on it is reduced with pruning.

Northern Nevada gives trees two tests a year. Downslope wind pulls forks apart, and heavy wet snow loads long limbs. If a tree of yours has a tight fork and a target underneath it, the time to ask is before either arrives. See [heavy wet snow and broken limbs](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/heavy-snow-broken-limbs/).

## What standards apply to this work?

The tree care industry works to the ANSI A300 standards, which include a part on supplemental support systems, and to the best management practices published by the International Society of Arboriculture. An ISA Certified Arborist, WE-11728A, is on our staff, and every job is assessed by a certified arborist before work begins.

### What is included

- An arborist's assessment of the fork, the limb and the whole tree
- A plain recommendation: support it, prune it or remove it
- Installation of the support system
- Pruning to take weight off the weak part where needed

### Equipment we bring

- 75-foot Altec boom truck
- Aerial lift

## Tree cabling and bracing questions

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Does cabling hurt the tree?

The hardware makes small wounds where it is attached. For a sound tree with a weak fork, that trade is usually worth it. The arborist will tell you if it is not.

### How long does a cable last?

It depends on the system, the tree and how fast it grows. Supported trees should be re-checked over the years, and the arborist will suggest when.

### Can you cable a tree that has already split?

Sometimes. A fresh, clean split in a sound tree may be braced and cabled. A split with decay behind it usually means removal. It takes a look in person to know.

### Is cabling cheaper than removal?

We do not publish prices, and the two jobs are very different. The free estimate will lay out the options for your tree so you can compare them.
