Washoe Valley lies between Carson City and Reno at about 5,100 feet, with the Carson Range on one side and the lake on the other. When wind pushes a whole tree over, the roots lift out of the ground in a disc of wood, soil and rock that can stand taller than a person. After the trunk is cut away, that disc is what is left. It is not a job for a grinder alone. The soil and rock packed into it would wreck the teeth. The usual approach is to deal with the plate by machine, then grind what remains at ground level if needed. The 2024 Davis Fire, mapped at 5,824 acres, and the 2011 Washoe Drive Fire, mapped at 3,178 acres, both have their centers within about 4 miles in the federal record. A burned tree that has been cut leaves a charred stump, sometimes hollowed below ground where the roots burned out. That hollow is a hazard to walk or drive over. Tell the office if a stump is from a burned tree so the arborist knows to check the ground around it. ## Ordinary stumps on older lots Most stumps here are the plain kind: a tree was cut and the stump stayed. With half the homes dating from before 1980, many are wide. Grinding takes the stump out so you can plant grass, shrubs or a new tree.
