# Crane tree removal in Washoe Valley, NV

Crane tree removal in Washoe Valley is the closest crane work we do outside Carson City: the valley is about 15 miles, or about 25 minutes without traffic, from our yard. Battle Born Tree Service uses its own crane there for tall trees beside houses and for trees too damaged to climb.

Washoe Valley lies between Carson City and Reno at about 5,100 feet. The Census Bureau estimates that about 53% of its homes were built before 1980, and the USDA Forest Service puts about 94% of its buildings in the direct wildfire exposure class.

## At a glance

- About 25 minutes from our yard without traffic
- About 53% of homes built before 1980
- About 94% of buildings directly exposed to wildland vegetation (USDA Forest Service)

## Why does a rural valley need a crane?

It is a fair question, since a rural parcel can look as if it has room to drop a tree. The trees that worry people are not the ones in the open. They are the ones that were left, or planted, right beside the house for shade and shelter, and that now stand taller than anything else on the lot. A tree like that cannot be felled in one piece in any direction without hitting the house, the barn, the fence or the power drop.

The crane takes it down in the one safe direction left, which is up.

## What about trees damaged by fire?

Washoe Valley has seen fire at close range. The 2024 Davis Fire was mapped at 5,824 acres with its center about 3.6 miles from the community, and the 2011 Washoe Drive Fire at 3,178 acres about 3.3 miles away. Whatever kills a tree, whether fire, drought or beetles, the result is the same for the crew: the wood is brittle and should not be climbed more than necessary.

A crane lets the climber attach, cut and move on, with the weight of each section already carried by the machine. An arborist should look at any scorched or dying tree before you decide. Our guide on [lessons from local wildfires](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/lessons-from-local-wildfires/) covers the Davis Fire and others.

## How does the work protect pasture and landscaping?

Traditional removal of a large tree means trucks and heavy machinery driven to the trunk. On irrigated ground that leaves ruts. The crane works from one firm spot, usually the driveway or a gravel pad, and reaches to the tree. Sections land in a drop zone beside the chipper. The process greatly reduces the time on site and the impact on the surroundings.

## Is the crane the first step in defensible space?

Often it is. With nearly every building in the direct exposure class, the 100 feet around a Washoe Valley home matter. The large, dead or crowded trees nearest the house are the hardest part of that work and the part a homeowner cannot do alone. Once they are out, the rest is thinning, limbing and brush work. ## Any permit to think about?

Washoe Valley is unincorporated Washoe County. Our research found no county permit rule for removing a tree on private property. If your parcel is in an association, read its rules first.

## Crane-assisted tree removal questions in Washoe Valley

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### How soon can a crane get to Washoe Valley?

We do not promise arrival times. What we can say is that the valley is about 25 minutes from the yard without traffic, the phone is answered seven days a week, and emergencies are taken 24 hours a day.

### Can you remove a burned tree with a crane?

Yes. A crane is well suited to trees that are dead or brittle, because each section is held before it is cut. The arborist assesses the tree first.

### Will the crane get down my gravel driveway?

Usually, if the surface is firm and there is room to turn and set up. The arborist checks the route and any soft spots at the estimate.

### Do you take the logs away?

Yes, or we leave them if you want them. If you are after firewood instead, see [firewood in Washoe Valley](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/washoe-valley/firewood/).
