Retrieved October 1, 2026. Wadsworth sits where the Truckee River turns north toward Pyramid Lake, just off Interstate 80 and about 3 miles from Fernley. At about 4,070 feet it is one of the lowest towns we serve, and unlike its newer neighbor it is an old settlement with old trees. ## How is Wadsworth different from Fernley next door? Age. About 43% of Wadsworth homes were built before 1980 and the median home dates from 1983, against 14% and 2001 in Fernley (ACS 2020-2024). Wadsworth has only about 700 residents and about 320 housing units on less than 4 square miles, so these are small-sample figures and should be read as approximate. About 62% of homes are single-family houses and about 29% are manufactured homes. Older homes plus river-bottom soil add up to bigger trees. Across Northern Nevada, river corridors are where cottonwoods and willows reach their full size, and a full-size tree near a house is a different job from thinning a subdivision tree. Our [guide to keeping, pruning or removing cottonwoods](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/cottonwoods-keep-prune-or-remove/) walks through how that decision is made. ## Climate at the river bend Two stations with 1991-2020 normals sit close by. Wadsworth 4 N, about 4 miles from town at 4,000 feet, records a mean annual temperature of 52.5 degrees. The Fernley 2.6 WNW gauge, about 3 miles away, averages 7.61 inches of precipitation a year. The USDA hardiness zone for ZIP 89442 is 7a, with average extreme lows of 0 to 5 degrees. Away from the river, that is desert rainfall, and yard trees need steady water. Close to the river, roots can reach groundwater and trees grow fast, which is one reason limbs get long and heavy. ## Fire history around Wadsworth The Forest Service rates Wadsworth's risk to homes higher than 88% of US communities and 42% of Nevada communities. About 12% of buildings are in the direct exposure zone and about 88% in the indirect zone. Washoe County as a whole ranks higher than 97% of US counties, so Wadsworth is on the lower end for its county. Six fires of 300 acres or more have a mapped center within about 10 miles since 1980, including Nixon in 2011 (11,195 acres), Narrows in 2011 (3,319 acres) and Black Mountain in 2017 (966 acres). ## Which jobs make sense at this distance?
