# Tree trimming and pruning in Virginia City, NV

Tree trimming in Virginia City is pruning for snow load and for fire, on old trees in tight places. The town's weather station averages 46.4 inches of snow a year, more than three times the Carson City figure, and more than half of its homes were built before 1960.

Virginia City stands at about 6,200 feet on the side of Mount Davidson, about 16 minutes without traffic from Battle Born Tree Service's yard. Streets are narrow and stepped up the hill, and a yard tree here usually has a building, a wall or a road directly below it.

## At a glance

- 46.4 inches of snow a year at the Virginia City station
- About 54% of homes built before 1960; median year 1956
- Risk to homes higher than 99.4% of US communities
- About 11 miles and 16 minutes from our Carson City yard

## How do you prune a tree for snow?

By reducing the places where snow can get leverage. The Virginia City station, a few blocks from the center of town at 6,340 feet, averages 46.4 inches of snow and 11.7 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). The Carson City station in the valley averages 14.0 inches of snow.

Snow breaks trees at predictable points: long horizontal limbs, forks where two trunks press together, and branches already weakened by decay or old storm damage. The arborist shortens over-extended limbs back to a side branch, thins crowded ends and removes dead wood, which is brittle and comes down first. Where two trunks share the load, [cabling](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/cabling-bracing/) may be suggested along with the pruning. [Storm and snow-load breakage](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/storm-and-snow-load-breakage/) shows what to look for from the ground.

## Old lots, old trees

About 76% of Virginia City homes were built before 1980 and about 54% before 1960, with a median year of 1956 (ACS 2020-2024; only about 640 residents, so approximate). No other town we serve has a median that early.

Old trees carry more dead wood and more history. A climber in the crown can see cracks, cavities and past topping cuts that are hidden from the street. Where an older tree was topped at some point, the sprouts that grew back are weakly attached. Pruning can thin and shorten those sprouts over a few visits so the tree is rebuilt, not cut flat again. See [why topping a tree is not pruning](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/why-tree-topping-is-not-pruning/).

## Pruning in the highest-rated fire community we serve

The Forest Service rates Virginia City's risk to homes higher than 99.4% of US communities and 95% of Nevada communities. Nineteen fire perimeters of 300 acres or more have a mapped center within about 10 miles since 1980, among them Linehan in 2006 (5,863 acres) and Davis in 2024 (5,824 acres).

With old buildings standing close together, branches touching a wall, a roof or a porch deserve attention first. We cut them back, lift lower limbs and clear dead material out of the crown. The rest of the picture is on our [Virginia City defensible space page](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/virginia-city/defensible-space/).

## Can a boom truck work on these streets?

Sometimes. Our 75-foot Altec boom truck needs level, firm ground to set up, and many lots on the hill do not offer it. Where the truck cannot reach, pruning is done by climbers and the brush is lowered on ropes and carried to the chipper. The arborist checks the street, the slope and overhead wires during the free estimate, and that visit decides the method.

## Timing at 6,200 feet

Dead and dangerous limbs can be pruned at any time. For live wood, late winter suits most deciduous trees, and early spring and summer suit most conifers. Snow can sit late on the hill, so tell the office what your street is like in winter. The best time to prune for snow load is the autumn before, not the morning after.

## Tree trimming and pruning questions in Virginia City

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Do I need a permit to prune a tree in Virginia City?

We have not found a Storey County permit for pruning on private land. If the tree is on or next to public ground, ask the county before work.

### Will pruning stop limbs breaking in a heavy snow?

It lowers the odds. No one can promise a tree will not fail. Removing dead wood and shortening long limbs takes away the parts most likely to break.

### A limb is hanging over the street after a storm. What now?

Keep people away from it. If it is on a power line, stay clear and call NV Energy. Then call our 24-hour line at [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243).

### Do you prune fruit trees on old Comstock lots?

Yes. From a large cottonwood to a fruit tree, we prune them all. Our fruit tree guide covers timing.
