Battle Born Tree Service checks access and what lies under the stump at a free estimate, about 16 minutes from our yard without traffic. Virginia City is built on the side of a mountain at about 6,200 feet. The lot itself. A yard here may be a narrow terrace between an upper wall and a lower one, reached by stairs. The grinder has to get onto that terrace and work without loading the edge of an old wall. At the estimate the arborist looks at the route from the street, the condition and height of nearby walls, and how close the stump is to them. A stump growing in or against a retaining wall is a special case: its roots may be part of what is holding the wall, and grinding or pulling it can leave a gap. In that situation we may advise cutting it low and leaving it, or bringing in whoever will repair the wall. ## What might be under an old lot? More than on a newer property. A house from the 1950s or earlier has had generations of plumbing and wiring changes, and old lots collect buried things: abandoned pipe, old footings, stone and brick.
