If anyone is hurt, call 911 before anything else, and report any tree in a power line to NV Energy before you call us. Verdi sits where the Truckee River leaves the Sierra, hard against the California line. The rain gauge here records more water than any other we use on the Reno side of our service area, and more water grows bigger trees. ## At a glance - Gauge Reno 9.0 W, in Verdi: about 19.7 inches of precipitation a year - Wildfire risk to homes higher than 98.8% of US communities (USFS) - About 13% of homes built before 1960 (small sample, approximate) - About 54 minutes from our Carson City yard; Nevada side only ## Why is Verdi different from the rest of the Reno area? Water. The volunteer gauge Reno 9.0 W, a fifth of a mile from the center of Verdi, averages about 19.7 inches of precipitation a year in NOAA's 1991-2020 normals. The Reno airport averages about 7.4. Verdi is also cooler: the Verdi 2W station just over the line records a mean temperature of 49.2 degrees. Trees along a river corridor with that much moisture grow tall and carry a lot of crown. Saturated soil also holds roots less firmly. The storm that brings a big tree down here is often rain or wet snow followed by wind. ## Old Verdi and its trees Verdi is a small place, about 1,000 people and about 530 homes, so Census percentages are rough. With that caution, about 13% of homes were built before 1960 and about a quarter before 1980. Around the older houses stand trees that have never had a house-free place to fall. For a tree over a structure, the crane lifts each section up and away. Where the ground is too soft or too tight for the crane, the arborist may choose the boom truck or a climber. That decision is made on site. ## Fire on record near Verdi The USDA Forest Service ranks Verdi's wildfire risk to homes higher than 98.8% of US communities, with about a third of buildings in the direct exposure zone. The 1994 Crystal Fire, mapped at 7,392 acres, and the 2006 Verdi Fire, mapped at 5,662 acres, have mapped centers within about 4 miles of town. Dead standing trees are a hazard in a wind storm and in a fire season alike. They can be removed at any time of year. ## Where the service area stops We work in Nevada only. Verdi, Nevada is in our service area. Addresses across the state line are not, and we do not take emergency calls there. ## How to reach us and what to say Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Say whether the tree is on a building, across a road or driveway, or in the river corridor where access may be soft. The run from our yard is about 44.5 miles, roughly 54 minutes with a clear road. We give that as a distance. On storm days we work calls by danger first and do not quote arrival times. If a wire is involved, NV Energy has to make it safe before any tree crew can touch the tree.
