# Defensible space and fire mitigation in Verdi, NV

Defensible space in Verdi has to be maintained more often than in Reno, because a gauge in the community records about 19.7 inches of precipitation a year and vegetation grows back quickly. Battle Born Tree Service limbs and thins the pines, cuts the brush and removes dead trees for homes on the Nevada side of the state line.

Verdi sits in the Truckee River canyon west of Reno at about 4,900 feet. The USDA Forest Service ranks its risk to homes higher than 98.8% of US communities and about 88% of Nevada communities, and a third of its buildings are in the direct exposure zone.

## Why does more rain mean more fire work?

Water grows fuel. The Reno 9.0 W gauge, a fifth of a mile from the centre of Verdi, averages 19.69 inches of precipitation a year in NOAA's 1991-2020 normals. Reno-Tahoe International Airport averages 7.35 inches. Brush, grass and tree seedlings respond to that difference, and summers are still dry enough to cure all of it.

A cleared zone in Verdi fills back in. Plan to have it looked at each spring instead of treating it as a one-time project.

## River bottom below, pine slopes above

Verdi has two settings. Along the river the trees are broadleaf and the concern is dead wood, fallen limbs and thick undergrowth. On the slopes the trees are conifers and the concern is ladder fuel and needle litter.

For pine ground, the Living With Fire guide says to remove needles from the first 5 feet, clean them up once each spring from 5 to 30 feet, and keep them under 3 inches deep from 30 to 100 feet. ## Older homes, bigger trees

About one in four Verdi homes was built before 1980 and about 13% before 1960 (American Community Survey; with about 1,000 residents the margins are wide). Around those houses the trees are large. Limbing up a mature pine, or removing a dead one beside a roof, is work for a boom truck, a climber or the crane, and the arborist picks the method at the estimate. ## The three defensible space zones

- Zone 0: 0 to 5 feet. Ember-resistant zone. Nothing that burns against the house: clear dead leaves and needles, move firewood away, cut back branches that touch walls or hang over the roof.
- Zone 1: 5 to 30 feet. Lean, clean and green. Remove dead plants and ladder fuels, limb up trees, and break up continuous shrubs such as junipers.
- Zone 2: 30 to 100 feet. Reduced fuel. Thin crowded trees and brush so fire stays on the ground and slows down. This is where the brush mower and masticator work.
