# Tree service in Skyland, NV

Skyland, Nevada is a tiny Lake Tahoe community where 95% of homes are detached houses, about 85% were built before 1980 and about 65% of buildings sit in the direct wildfire exposure zone. It is outside the towns named on our website, but Battle Born Tree Service can be called out there; call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) to confirm.

Skyland is one of the smallest places on this site: about 310 people, 168 households and 245 buildings in the USFS count. Treat every figure as approximate. What the numbers do show clearly is a settled, owner-held, 1970s lakeside neighborhood where the trees are the oldest part of the property.

## What do the housing numbers say?

The median home dates from 1973. About 85% of housing predates 1980, none of the sample predates 1960 and about 3% went up in 2000 or later. About 95% of homes are detached houses, about 93% of occupied homes are owner-occupied and the median age is about 66 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024, Skyland CDP). There are 242 housing units against 168 households, so some homes are second homes.

Nearly all of these are separate lots with their own trees, so unlike a condo complex, the decision on each tree typically belongs to one owner, not an association.

## How large are the trees likely to be?

A conifer that has stood beside a 1973 house since then is fifty years old and has carried more than fifty winters of snow. Whether it is sound is an arborist's call and not a guess from a census table, but the age tells you why an annual look matters: see [warning signs of tree failure](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/warning-signs-tree-failure/) and [what arborists check in a risk assessment](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-risk-assessment-what-arborists-check/).

Where a tree stands close to a house, a crane or boom truck can lower the pieces in a way that is hard to do from a climber's rope. The method is decided at the free estimate.

## What are the fire numbers?

The USDA Forest Service counts 245 buildings in Skyland: about 65% in the direct wildfire exposure zone, about 32% indirect and about 3% minimal. Risk to homes is rated higher than 97.8% of US communities and higher than about 76% of Nevada communities.

Three perimeters of 300 acres or more since 1980 have a mapped center within about 10 miles: the Gondola Fire of 2002 (643 acres, about 5 miles), Walley's Fire of 1984 (316 acres, about 7 miles) and the Autumn Hills Fire of 1996 (3,805 acres, about 8 miles). The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates defensible space; see [its page](https://battleborntreeservice.com/fire-districts/tahoe-douglas-fpd/).

## Which weather station applies?

Skyland sits at about 6,269 feet, hardiness zone 6b on the 2023 USDA map. The Glenbrook gauge is 3.7 miles away at 6,350 feet, close in height, and averages 18.46 inches of precipitation and a 46.0-degree mean temperature (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Glenbrook has no snowfall normal, so we do not quote one. Tahoe City, in California and about 15 miles away, records 179.0 inches a year; that is a reference for the lake's snowy shore and not a Skyland figure.

No household in the Census sample reports wood or bottled gas as its main heating fuel.

## Do we work in Skyland?

### Rules here

This community is inside the Tahoe Basin, where the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, measured 4.5 feet above the ground. On lakeshore lots the threshold is 6 inches for live trees between the house and the lake. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit.

TRPA also asks for a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates defensible space and can issue the fire-safety tree permit. The agency decides.

### Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree

In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.

Distance around the trunk (inches)

Where is the tree? Not between the house and the lake Lakeshore lot, between the house and the lake

Enter the measurement to see the diameter.

This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. [TRPA tree rules](https://www.trpa.gov/trees-and-defensible-space/)
