# Defensible space and fire mitigation in Skyland, NV

Defensible space in Skyland starts from a high exposure figure: about 65% of the community's 245 buildings are in the direct wildfire exposure zone, and risk to homes is higher than 97.8% of US communities. Skyland is outside the towns named on our site; call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) to confirm.

Skyland is small, but nearly all of it is single-family lots on forested ground. The same list applies to most properties.

## At a glance

- About 65% of 245 buildings in the direct exposure zone
- Risk to homes higher than 97.8% of US communities
- Gondola Fire of 2002, center about 5 miles away
- About 37 minutes from our yard without traffic

## What do the numbers say?

The USDA Forest Service record counts 245 buildings: about 65% direct, about 32% indirect, about 3% minimal. Risk to homes is higher than 97.8% of US communities and about 76% of Nevada communities.

Three perimeters of 300 acres or more since 1980 are mapped within about 10 miles: Gondola (2002, 643 acres, about 5 miles), Walley's (1984, 316 acres, about 7 miles) and Autumn Hills (1996, 3,805 acres, about 8 miles).

## How does it work at Tahoe?

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District says it offers defensible space inspections, and that its inspectors are certified to issue TRPA tree removal permits when removal is needed for fire safety. Programs change; see [its page](https://battleborntreeservice.com/fire-districts/tahoe-douglas-fpd/) and confirm with the district.

The zones are those in UNR Extension's Living With Fire guide: 0 to 5 feet, 5 to 30 feet, and 30 to 100 feet.

## What we do on a Skyland lot

- Remove dead trees, dead limbs and dead shrubs
- Limb up conifers and clear branches over roofs
- Cut back crowded stems where TRPA rules allow
- Chip and haul the brush

Live trees over 14 inches go through the district or TRPA first.

### Rules here

This community is inside the Tahoe Basin, where the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, measured 4.5 feet above the ground. On lakeshore lots the threshold is 6 inches for live trees between the house and the lake. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit.

TRPA also asks for a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates defensible space and can issue the fire-safety tree permit. The agency decides.

### Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree

In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.

Distance around the trunk (inches)

Where is the tree? Not between the house and the lake Lakeshore lot, between the house and the lake

Enter the measurement to see the diameter.

This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. [TRPA tree rules](https://www.trpa.gov/trees-and-defensible-space/)

## The three defensible space zones

- Zone 0: 0 to 5 feet. Ember-resistant zone. Nothing that burns against the house: clear dead leaves and needles, move firewood away, cut back branches that touch walls or hang over the roof.
- Zone 1: 5 to 30 feet. Lean, clean and green. Remove dead plants and ladder fuels, limb up trees, and break up continuous shrubs such as junipers.
- Zone 2: 30 to 100 feet. Reduced fuel. Thin crowded trees and brush so fire stays on the ground and slows down. This is where the brush mower and masticator work.

Zones from the University of Nevada, Reno Extension Living With Fire guide (2023). Your fire protection district may set its own rules.
