- Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates properties

## What do the fire numbers say?

The USDA Forest Service record counts 529 buildings: about 49% direct, about 49% indirect, about 3% minimal. Risk to homes is higher than 97.9% of US communities and about 78% of Nevada communities.

Four perimeters of 300 acres or more since 1980 are mapped within about 10 miles: Gondola (2002, 643 acres, about 3 miles), Walley's (1984, 316 acres, about 6 miles), Autumn Hills (1996, 3,805 acres, about 6 miles) and Angora (2007, 3,070 acres, about 9 miles).

## Who evaluates the property?

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District. It says it offers defensible space inspections and that its inspectors are certified to issue TRPA tree removal permits when removal is necessary for fire safety. Terms change, so see [its page](https://battleborntreeservice.com/fire-districts/tahoe-douglas-fpd/) and ask the district to confirm.

UNR Extension's Living With Fire zones are 0 to 5 feet, 5 to 30 feet and 30 to 100 feet.

## What tree work fits?

- Remove dead trees and dead branches within the zones
- Limb up conifers so a ground fire cannot climb into them
- Thin crowded stems, within TRPA rules
- Clear branches over roofs and chimneys

Where a tree is live and over 14 inches, the district or TRPA permit comes before any cut.

## Associations and second homes

About half of housing is not a detached house, so a complex's trees are usually the association's. With 802 housing units for 352 households, a manager may be the one to arrange the visit. Round Hill Village is not among the towns named on our site; call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) to confirm. It is about 44 minutes from the yard without traffic.

### Rules here

This community is inside the Tahoe Basin, where the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, measured 4.5 feet above the ground. On lakeshore lots the threshold is 6 inches for live trees between the house and the lake. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit.

TRPA also asks for a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates defensible space and can issue the fire-safety tree permit. The agency decides.

### Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree

In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.

Distance around the trunk (inches)

Where is the tree? Not between the house and the lake Lakeshore lot, between the house and the lake

Enter the measurement to see the diameter.

This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. [TRPA tree rules](https://www.trpa.gov/trees-and-defensible-space/)

## The three defensible space zones

- Zone 0: 0 to 5 feet. Ember-resistant zone. Nothing that burns against the house: clear dead leaves and needles, move firewood away, cut back branches that touch walls or hang over the roof.
- Zone 1: 5 to 30 feet. Lean, clean and green. Remove dead plants and ladder fuels, limb up trees, and break up continuous shrubs such as junipers.
- Zone 2: 30 to 100 feet. Reduced fuel. Thin crowded trees and brush so fire stays on the ground and slows down. This is where the brush mower and masticator work.

Zones from the University of Nevada, Reno Extension Living With Fire guide (2023). Your fire protection district may set its own rules.
