Most Minden trees were planted with houses built since the 1990s, so the work is likely to be pruning for structure and clearance, with removals, stump grinding and snow removal alongside. ## Minden at a glance - **Drive from our yard:** about 26 min 19.5 miles - **Elevation:** 4,725 ft USGS - **USDA hardiness zone:** 6b 2023 map - **Homes built before 1980:** 16% median year built 1995 - **Wildfire risk to homes:** higher than 91.3% of US communities USDA Forest Service - **Owner-occupied homes:** 74% ACS 2020-2024 Sources: drive time from our yard at 6301 US Highway 50 East, free-flow, OSRM / Census Geocoder; elevation, USGS 3DEP; hardiness zone, USDA 2023 map; housing figures, U.S. Census Bureau ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates; wildfire risk, USDA Forest Service Wildfire Risk to Communities (April 2026 data). Retrieved October 1, 2026. Minden sits on the floor of Carson Valley at about 4,725 feet, on US 395, with roughly 3,700 residents. It is an irrigated town in a dry valley, and it is one of the coldest places we work on winter nights. ## What kind of tree work does Minden need most? Care for trees in their first thirty years. Only about 16% of Minden homes were built before 1980 and under 3% before 1960. The median home dates from 1995, and about 31% have gone up since 2000 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024). About 85% are detached single-family houses. A shade tree planted in 1995 is now big enough to reach the roof, the neighbor's fence and the street light, but young enough that good pruning still shapes how it grows. Removing crossing limbs, correcting double leaders and raising the crown over the driveway now is far less work than dealing with a split trunk later. See [tree trimming in Minden](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/minden/tree-trimming/) and our guide to [crown thinning, raising and reduction](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/crown-thinning-raising-reduction/). Where a Minden home does date from before 1960, the trees beside it can be very large. Those are the [removal](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/minden/tree-removal/) and dead wooding jobs. ## How cold and how dry is Minden? The Minden weather station is half a mile from the center of town. It averages 9.34 inches of precipitation and 21.8 inches of snow a year, with a mean annual temperature of 50.1 degrees (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). The average winter low is 19.9 degrees, about five degrees colder than the Carson City station, the pattern you expect where cold air settles on a valley floor. The 2023 USDA map puts Minden in hardiness zone 6b, where the average extreme winter low is minus 5 to 0 degrees. Nine inches of precipitation will not carry a shade tree, so Minden's canopy lives on irrigation. When watering stops, decline follows within a few seasons: read [watering mature trees in the high desert](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/watering-mature-trees-high-desert/). ## Is wildfire a concern in the middle of the valley? Less than on the edges, but not zero. The USDA Forest Service rates Minden's risk to homes higher than 91.3% of US communities and just under half of Nevada communities. About 11% of buildings are in the direct exposure zone and about 89% in the indirect zone, where wind-carried embers are the threat. Six fire perimeters of 300 acres or more have a mapped center within about 10 miles since 1980, including Autumn Hills in 1996 (3,805 acres) and Fredricksburg in 1986 (3,383 acres). In town, the useful work is close to the house: dead wood out of the trees, limbs off the roof and dry brush away from fences. Our [defensible space service](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/defensible-space-fire-mitigation/) covers it. ## What winter services do we offer in Minden? Two. [Snow and ice removal](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/minden/snow-removal/) for driveways, walks and commercial lots, and [firewood and wood chips](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/minden/firewood/), with availability and pricing by phone from the office. About 1% of Minden households heat mainly with wood, so most firewood here is for a stove or fireplace used on the cold nights the station records. ## What else can we do in Minden?
