# Stump grinding in Lemmon Valley, NV

Stump grinding in Lemmon Valley is partly a fire question: the USDA Forest Service ranks wildfire risk to homes here higher than 99.2% of US communities, and a dead stump or a heap of grindings near a building is dry fuel. Lemmon Valley is an established community north of Reno at about 4,954 feet. About 53% of its homes were built before 1980, almost none before 1960, and about 96% of households own their home (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024). The trees went in during the 1960s and 1970s and are now at full size.

## Is an old stump really a fire problem?

On its own, a low stump out in bare dirt is not much of one. The trouble is where stumps tend to be and what collects around them. A stump beside a shed, under a deck edge or against a fence gathers leaves and weeds, dries to tinder and sits where embers land.

The Forest Service places about 45% of Lemmon Valley's buildings in the direct exposure zone, next to wildland vegetation. The 2020 Poeville Road Fire, mapped at 2,973 acres, and the 1999 Reservoir Fire, mapped at 6,163 acres, both have their centers within about 4 miles in the federal record. ## Where should the grindings go?

Not next to the house. University of Nevada, Reno Extension's Living With Fire guide sets out three zones: 0 to 5 feet from the home is ember-resistant, 5 to 30 feet is lean, clean and green, and 30 to 100 feet is reduced fuel. A thick layer of fresh wood grindings does not fit the first of those.

## Stumps from trees you cut yourself
