# Tree service in Kingsbury, NV

Battle Born Tree Service provides tree service in Kingsbury, the mountainside community along the Kingsbury Grade above Stateline. At about 7,126 feet it is the highest place we work, with steep lots, 1970s homes and more than half of its buildings in the direct wildfire exposure zone.

About 2,200 people live in Kingsbury year-round, spread over nearly 22 square miles of slope between the lake and Daggett Pass. Height, grade and snow shape every tree job here.

## What does 7,100 feet mean for trees?

A short growing season and a long snow season. The Daggett Pass station, less than a mile from the center of Kingsbury at 7,334 feet, records 21.80 inches of precipitation a year, an average summer high of only 71.5 degrees and an average winter low of 22.9 (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). That is more than twice the moisture Carson City gets.

The station does not publish a snowfall normal, but most of that precipitation arrives in winter. Snow load is the main cause of broken tops and split limbs at this height, and a tree that has lost its top once tends to regrow weakly attached leaders. An arborist can tell you whether a damaged crown is worth pruning or whether removal is the answer: [arborist consultations in Kingsbury](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/kingsbury/arborist/).

## How old is the neighborhood?

About 68% of Kingsbury homes were built before 1980, the median home dates from 1976, and only about 2.5% have been built since 2000 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024). This is a settled 1970s community. Just under half of the homes are detached houses. The rest are condominiums and attached units stepped up the hillside.

Fifty years of growth on a steep lot puts crowns above roofs from the uphill side and over them from the downhill side. Setting up on a grade takes planning: where the truck can sit level, where wood can be landed and how the chipper reaches it. Our [crane-assisted removal in Kingsbury](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/kingsbury/crane-tree-removal/) page explains when a lift makes sense, and [tree removal in Kingsbury](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/kingsbury/tree-removal/) covers the rest.

## How exposed is Kingsbury to wildfire?

The USDA Forest Service places 53% of Kingsbury's buildings in the direct exposure zone and the other 47% in the indirect zone. None are rated minimal. Risk to homes ranks above 97.9% of US communities and above about 77% of Nevada communities.

Four fire perimeters of 300 acres or more have a mapped center within about 10 miles since 1980: among them Autumn Hills in 1996 (3,805 acres), Gondola in 2002 (643 acres) and Walley's in 1984 (316 acres). Fire moves fastest uphill, so on a slope the downhill side of the house is where thinning and limbing up count most. See [defensible space in Kingsbury](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/kingsbury/defensible-space/).

## Do people in Kingsbury burn wood?

A few do. About 4% of Kingsbury households heat mainly with wood, the highest share among the Nevada-side Tahoe communities in the Census data, where most report none. We sell firewood and wood chips from our Carson City yard: call the office for availability and pricing, and see [firewood and wood chips](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/firewood-wood-chips/).

The drive from our yard is about 33 miles and about 48 minutes without traffic. In winter the grade can be under chain controls, and that estimate does not allow for them.

### Rules here

Kingsbury, on the lake side of Daggett Pass, is in the Tahoe Basin, where the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove any live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height. Breast height is 4.5 feet above the ground on the uphill side of the trunk. A dead tree that could fall on a house may be removed without a permit.

For defensible space, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates the lot and issues the tree permit. The 2023 USDA hardiness map lists ZIP 89449 as zone 7a, although at this elevation the Daggett Pass temperatures above are the better guide. The agency decides what may be removed.

### Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree

In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.

Distance around the trunk (inches)

Where is the tree? Not between the house and the lake Lakeshore lot, between the house and the lake

Enter the measurement to see the diameter.

This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. [TRPA tree rules](https://www.trpa.gov/trees-and-defensible-space/)

## Tree service questions in Kingsbury

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Do I need a TRPA permit to remove a tree in Kingsbury?

Inside the Tahoe Basin, yes, for a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need one. If you are unsure whether your lot is in the basin, ask TRPA.

### Can you get equipment up a steep Kingsbury driveway?

The arborist checks access during the free estimate and chooses the method to suit: crane, boom truck, climbing or a mix. Nothing is decided until the site has been seen.

### When should conifers in Kingsbury be pruned?

Dead and hazardous limbs can be removed any time. Otherwise most conifers are best pruned in early spring and summer. In the Tahoe Basin, removing live branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree can require a permit.

### How far is Kingsbury from your Carson City yard?

About 33 miles, or about 48 minutes without traffic and without chain controls.

### Do you offer snow removal in Kingsbury?

Snow removal is one of our winter services: plowing, hauling, shoveling and salting for residential and commercial customers, available 24 hours in snow season. Ask whether your Kingsbury address is on the snow route when you call.
