# Defensible space and fire mitigation in Dayton, NV

Defensible space in Dayton is mainly ember protection for newer subdivision homes: the USDA Forest Service ranks Dayton's wildfire risk to homes higher than 98.9% of US communities, and about 73% of its buildings are in the indirect exposure zone. Battle Born Tree Service is about 7 miles away and clears, prunes and mows to the Living With Fire zones.

Dayton can look like a low-risk place, with mostly newer houses on subdivision streets. The Forest Service numbers say otherwise. Among the towns we serve, only Virginia City and Lemmon Valley rank higher.

## At a glance

- Risk to homes higher than 98.9% of US communities, 90% of Nevada's
- About 73% of buildings indirect exposure, 27% direct, none minimal
- About 56% of homes built in 2000 or later
- About 7 miles and 12 minutes from our yard, without traffic

## Why does a new subdivision rank so high?

The Forest Service's risk to homes measure combines how likely a wildfire is in the area with how intense it would be. Dayton's wildfire likelihood ranks higher than 99% of US communities. Open rangeland and hills lie around the town. Lyon County as a whole ranks at 93% for risk to homes.

Inside the subdivisions the mechanism is embers. About 73% of Dayton's roughly 6,700 buildings are indirectly exposed: no wildland at the back door, but within reach of embers from a fire in the hills and of fire moving between closely spaced houses. The other 27% are directly exposed, on streets that border open ground.

## What to fix on a ten-to-twenty-year-old yard

About 56% of Dayton's homes were built in 2000 or later and only about 10% before 1980 (American Community Survey 2020 to 2024). The trees are young and seldom the problem. The usual trouble is at ground level, close to the house.

- Shrubs under windows and against walls. Junipers and other dense evergreens in the first 5 feet are the first to go.
- Dead or drought-killed plants. A shrub that lost its drip line is tinder. We pull and haul them.
- Trees planted too close. A young tree a few feet from the eaves gets pruned clear of the roof now, or removed before it is large. Stumps can be ground in the same visit.
- Weeds and dry grass along fences. Cut and removed, especially on the side that faces open land.

Wood mulch is on the guide's Zone 0 list too, and a wooden fence that meets the house is worth a look. Those are for you or a landscaper. We deal with the plants.

## Lots that border open land or the river

On the direct-exposure streets the 30 to 100 foot zone is in play. Native sagebrush behind a fence can be mowed if you own it, or if its owner asks us to. Dayton also lies on the Carson River, and properties near the river corridor can have large [cottonwoods](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/fremont-cottonwood/) that shed dead limbs. Dead wooding those trees removes fuel and a falling hazard in one visit.

## Fires mapped around Dayton

Ten perimeter records of 300 acres or more since 1980 have centers within about 10 miles. The Linehan Fire of 2006 is mapped at 5,863 acres, centered about 6 miles away. The Industrial Fire of 2007, at 428 acres, is centered about 3 miles away. Also in the record are the Moundhouse Fire of 1983 (2,345 acres), the Six Mile 2 Fire of 2006 (1,733 acres) and the Como fires of 2008 and 2012.

## Twelve minutes down the highway

Our yard is on US Highway 50 East, and Dayton is about 7 miles farther along the same road. It is the closest town to us outside Carson City and Mound House. That makes short jobs worthwhile, and it makes a yearly upkeep visit easy to fit in. Estimates are free.

## The three defensible space zones

- Zone 0: 0 to 5 feet. Ember-resistant zone. Nothing that burns against the house: clear dead leaves and needles, move firewood away, cut back branches that touch walls or hang over the roof.
- Zone 1: 5 to 30 feet. Lean, clean and green. Remove dead plants and ladder fuels, limb up trees, and break up continuous shrubs such as junipers.
- Zone 2: 30 to 100 feet. Reduced fuel. Thin crowded trees and brush so fire stays on the ground and slows down. This is where the brush mower and masticator work.

Zones from the University of Nevada, Reno Extension Living With Fire guide (2023). Your fire protection district may set its own rules.

## Defensible space and fire mitigation questions in Dayton

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### My Dayton house is new. Do I really need defensible space?

The Forest Service rates no building in Dayton as minimally exposed. New construction helps, but embers light plants, mulch and debris next to the walls. The first 5 feet is worth doing on any house here.

### Does Dayton require a permit to remove a tree?

Our research found no Lyon County permit rule for trees on private property. If your neighborhood has an association with landscaping rules, check them before removing front-yard trees.

### Can you grind the stumps after removing shrubs and small trees?

Yes. Tell the estimator, and stump grinding is written into the estimate.

### How close is Battle Born Tree Service to Dayton?

About 7 miles, or about 12 minutes without traffic, from 6301 US Highway 50 East.
