# Tree removal in Crystal Bay, NV

Tree removal in Crystal Bay, NV begins with two questions: is the tree alive, and is its trunk more than 14 inches across at 4.5 feet off the ground? If both answers are yes, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit before Battle Born Tree Service or anyone else takes it down.

Crystal Bay is the smallest community on our map: about 130 year-round residents and a little over 200 homes on less than half a square mile at the north end of Lake Tahoe's Nevada shore. Nearly half of those homes were built before 1960, under conifers that have kept growing ever since.

## At a glance

- TRPA permit for live trees over 14 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet
- North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District issues defensible space tree permits here
- About 47% of Crystal Bay homes were built before 1960
- About 33 miles from our Carson City yard

## Which permit applies to your Crystal Bay tree?

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) sets the basin-wide rule: a live tree larger than 14 inches in diameter at breast height needs a permit before removal. On a lakeshore lot the limit drops to 6 inches for trees standing between the house and the lake, which matters on any parcel that runs down to the water.

Two cases are simpler. A dead tree that could fall on a house needs no TRPA permit. And when the reason for removal is wildfire safety, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, which covers Crystal Bay and Incline Village, evaluates the property and issues defensible space tree permits. The agency decides in every case. Our part is to tell you which office to call and what they will want to know.

## Why are removals harder on a 1950s lake lot?

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey estimates that about 59% of Crystal Bay homes predate 1980 and about 47% predate 1960. With only about 215 housing units in the sample, treat those shares as rough. The pattern is still clear on the ground: houses, decks, stairways and parking pads were fitted between trees that were already tall, and seventy years of growth has closed whatever gaps were left.

A tree in that spot cannot be felled. It comes apart from the top in sections. When the trunk leans over a roof, or is too dead to carry a climber, our crane lifts each piece up and away to a landing area. The page on [crane-assisted tree removal in Crystal Bay](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/crystal-bay/crane-tree-removal/) explains when that is the better route.

## What does the arborist look at first?

Access, before anything else. On a short, steep street the plan depends on where a crane or our 75-foot boom truck can park and put its outriggers down, what wires cross the lot, and where cut sections can be set without touching the house next door. Tell the office if your driveway is shared, gated or too steep for a truck. If no machine can reach, a climber does the work on ropes.

## How does fire risk change the list of trees to remove?

The USDA Forest Service ranks Crystal Bay's wildfire risk to homes higher than about 93% of US communities. About 27% of its buildings sit in the direct exposure zone and about 71% in the indirect zone, where wind-carried embers are the concern. The 2003 Royal Fire, mapped at 339 acres, had its center about 3 miles away, and the 2001 Martis Fire, 14,429 acres, was mapped within about 10 miles.

That is why a removal visit here can cover more than the one tree you called about. Dead standing conifers and crowded small ones near the house are part of the same conversation as [defensible space in Crystal Bay](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/crystal-bay/defensible-space/).

## Where does our work stop?

At the state line. Crystal Bay ends at California, and Battle Born Tree Service works on the Nevada side only. From our yard at 6301 US Highway 50 East the drive is about 53 minutes without traffic.

### Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree

In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.

Distance around the trunk (inches)

Where is the tree? Not between the house and the lake Lakeshore lot, between the house and the lake

Enter the measurement to see the diameter.

This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. [TRPA tree rules](https://www.trpa.gov/trees-and-defensible-space/)

## Tree removal questions in Crystal Bay

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Can I remove a dead tree in Crystal Bay without a permit?

TRPA says a dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a permit. If you are not sure the tree is dead, or it stands near the lake, ask the agency before any work. The agency decides.

### Who handles defensible space tree permits in Crystal Bay?

The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District. It evaluates the property free of charge and issues the permit for trees that should come out for fire safety.

### Is my lakeshore tree under a different rule?

Yes. Between the house and the lake on a lakeshore lot, TRPA's permit threshold is 6 inches in diameter instead of 14. The checker on this page converts a tape measurement to diameter.

### Do you work across the state line from Crystal Bay?

No. We work in Nevada only.
