Often, but not always the same way. A stump next to the driveway is simple. A stump down a flight of stone steps, below a retaining wall or behind a house with no side yard is a different job. During the free estimate the arborist looks at the route in, the width of any gate or path, the slope the machine would sit on and what is directly below the work. Not necessarily. On a steep bank the roots of a cut tree keep holding soil for a time while they break down, and grinding opens up bare ground. Where the stump is in a planted bank above a road or a neighbor, it can make sense to cut it low and leave it, or to grind it and cover the spot right away. That is a judgment made on site by an [arborist](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/arborist-consultation/), not from a photo. ## What does the lakeshore rule have to do with a stump? The stump is the last step of a removal, and in Crystal Bay the removal is where the rule sits. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, and on lakeshore properties the limit drops to 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Any work on live vegetation in the backshore needs TRPA review as well. If a tree came down years ago and only the stump is left, mention whether it stands between the house and the water. The agency decides what it reviews. We can tell you what to ask. ## What about fire? The USDA Forest Service rates Crystal Bay's wildfire risk to homes higher than 92.9% of US communities, with about 27% of buildings in the direct exposure zone. Grindings are wood mulch. Nevada's Living With Fire guide keeps combustible mulch out of the first 5 feet around a house, and on a lot this small most stumps are close to a building. Plan on the grindings leaving with the crew unless there is a spot well away from the walls and the deck. ## The drive, and why it matters for a small job Crystal Bay is about 33 miles from our Carson City yard, about 53 minutes without traffic. For a single stump it helps to settle the details by phone and photo first, so the right machine comes on the first trip.
