Carson Valley is ranch ground with towns on it. Cottonwoods line the ditches and the river, the Sierra rises straight off the west edge at Genoa, and the Pine Nut Mountains close the east side. Tree work changes with which edge you live on.

## What kind of tree work does Carson Valley need?

Mostly care for trees planted in the last forty years, plus some very large old ones. Only about 16% of homes in Minden, 17% in Johnson Lane and 18% in Gardnerville were built before 1980, and the median home in Indian Hills, Minden and Johnson Lane dates from 1995 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024). Trees of that age need structure pruning, clearance from the house and the odd removal where one was planted too close.

The exceptions are the ranch cottonwoods and the older blocks. About 28% of Gardnerville Ranchos homes and about a third in Topaz Ranch Estates predate 1980, and roughly one Genoa home in six was built before 1960. That is where [large tree removal](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/large-tree-removal/) and [the cottonwood question](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/cottonwoods-keep-prune-or-remove/) come up.

## Which side of the valley has the fire problem?

Both edges, for different reasons. Along the Sierra front, the USDA Forest Service places about 75% of Genoa's buildings in the direct-exposure zone. On the east side, Johnson Lane's risk to homes ranks above 98.3% of US communities, and Topaz Ranch Estates is at 98.0% with about 54% of buildings directly exposed. Across Douglas County, about 38% of buildings are in the direct-exposure zone.

The Numbers Fire of 2020 is mapped at 18,380 acres and the Conner Fire of 2025 at 17,714 acres, both within about 10 miles of Ruhenstroth. Minden and Gardnerville, in the irrigated middle of the valley, rank lower, near the 90th percentile. [Defensible space](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/defensible-space-fire-mitigation/) work in Carson Valley is concentrated on the two edges.

## How cold and dry is it?

Colder than Carson City. The Minden station's average winter low is 19.9 F, about five degrees below the Carson City station, with 9.34 inches of precipitation and 21.8 inches of snow in a normal year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Minden, Genoa, Johnson Lane and Gardnerville Ranchos are in USDA hardiness zone 6b. At the south end, the Topaz Lake station records just 5.92 inches of precipitation.

Early and late snows catch trees in leaf. Limbs that fail under that load are covered in [heavy wet snow and broken limbs](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/heavy-snow-broken-limbs/).

## What do we do on acreage?

Johnson Lane, Genoa, Ruhenstroth, Indian Hills, the Ranchos and Topaz Ranch Estates are large-lot communities: about 94% of Johnson Lane homes are owner-occupied, and nearly all are single-family houses. Owners there ask for [lot clearing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/lot-clearing/), [brush mowing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/brush-mowing/) and fence-line work as often as pruning. In Topaz Ranch Estates about a quarter of households heat mainly with wood.
