# What is a widow-maker, and what should you do about hanging limbs?

A widow-maker is a broken or dead limb still caught in a tree, ready to fall without warning. Stay out from under it, keep others away and have a tree crew remove it, because standing below it to cut or pull it is how people get hurt.

Key takeaways

- A hanging limb is a hazard until it is on the ground.
- Do not stand, park or play under it.
- Do not shake, pull or cut it yourself.
- Hanging limbs near wires need the utility first.
- A tree crew has the equipment to take it down in a controlled way.

After wind or heavy snow, limbs can be left hanging in the crown, snapped but not yet on the ground. You may not hear them fall, and they do not always fall straight down. This guide is about recognizing the hazard and keeping clear.

## What is a widow-maker?

The name is old tree-work slang for a broken or dead branch hanging in a tree that can drop on anyone below. It may be partly attached, wedged in a fork or held by bark.

It can also be a dead limb that has not broken yet. The danger is that you cannot tell when it will let go, and a hanging limb does not always fall straight down, as Missouri Extension notes about bowed branches.

## Why are they so dangerous?

Because the weight comes down from height with no warning. NIOSH's study of tree care deaths between 1992 and 2007 found that being struck by or against an object, mostly a tree or branch, caused 42 percent of the deaths it counted.

Most of those were workers, but the physics applies to a homeowner standing under the same limb. Clearing hanging limbs is a job for trained crews with the right equipment, and we do not give instructions for it.

## What can you do from the ground?

Keep people, pets and cars out from under the tree and mark the area off. Look from a distance and note which limbs are hanging, how big they are and whether any wire is nearby.

Penn State Extension notes that knocking ice and snow off branches often causes more breakage, and Missouri Extension warns that a bowed or broken branch holds stored energy, so a small mistake with a saw can cause serious injury.

- Keep everyone away from the area beneath the tree.
- Look from a distance for wires, and call NV Energy if a line is touched.
- Take photos for your insurer.
- Call a tree service to take the limbs down.
- Do not use a ladder, pole saw or climb into the tree.

## When is a hanging limb an emergency?

When it is over a house, a door, a play area or a driveway, or when it is touching a wire. A large limb that is moving in wind is also an emergency.

If anyone is hurt, call 911. If a power line is involved, stay away and call NV Energy. Then call Battle Born's 24-hour emergency line at [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243).

## What does a crew do about it?

The crew assesses how the limb is held and what it could hit, then removes it in a controlled way, from the ground, a lift or a crane. They also look at the rest of the tree for more damage.

Battle Born offers emergency service and storm clean-up, including safety assessment, and its priority after severe storms is existing clients, though it serves anyone in need. See [emergency tree service](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/emergency-tree-service/).

## How can you reduce the chance of hanging limbs?

Pruning that removes dead wood and builds structure gives limbs less chance to break and hang. Trees that have been topped or shaped regrow weakly attached shoots, which are more likely to break in wind, as NV Energy's brochure explains.

An arborist can look at which limbs are most at risk. Battle Born offers dead wooding, which removes dead branches from the crown, and its estimates are free.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Can I knock it down with a pole?

We advise against it. The limb can fall unpredictably, and a pole can bring it onto you.

### How long can a hanging limb stay up?

There is no safe timeline. It can fall in the next breeze or stay for weeks. Treat it as a hazard until removed.

### Does insurance cover the removal?

Possibly if a covered structure was damaged. See the insurance guide.

### Is it safe to park under the tree?

Do not rely on that. Keep vehicles away until the limbs are down.

### Who should I call?
