# Why is topping a tree not pruning?

Topping cuts a tree's branches back to stubs or to branches too small to take over, and the International Society of Arboriculture says it harms trees. Proper pruning removes selected branches back to a point where the tree can heal and keep its structure.

Key takeaways

- Topping is cutting branches to stubs, and it hurts the tree.
- The ISA says it stresses the tree, opens wounds for decay and does not fix the height problem.
- Regrowth after topping is weakly attached and can break in wind.
- ANSI A300 pruning standards do not accept topping.
- Reduction pruning or removal are the honest alternatives.

Topping goes by names like hat-racking, heading and rounding over. It is often asked for when a tree seems too tall, and some companies will do it. A reputable arborist will explain why not and offer other options.

## What is topping, and why do people ask for it?

The ISA describes topping as the indiscriminate cutting of branches to stubs or to lateral branches that are not large enough to take over the terminal role. People ask for it because a tree is too tall, too close to a house or blocking a view.

It is also called heading, tipping, hat-racking and rounding over, and the result is the same: a tree with its crown cut back hard.

## Why is topping harmful?

The ISA says topping removes a large part of the crown, stresses the tree and forces rapid growth of many new shoots below each cut. If stored energy is too low, the tree can be seriously weakened and may die.

The cuts leave open wounds and stubs that give decay and insects a way in, and the new shoots are weakly attached. NV Energy's brochure says the same about shaped trees: vertical suckers sprout from cut ends and are more likely to break off, even in moderate winds.

- Large wounds that do not close.
- Weak, fast regrowth that breaks.
- Stress and loss of stored energy.
- More pruning needed later.
- A tree that can end up more hazardous over time.

## What is proper pruning instead?

Proper pruning removes selected branches, usually back to a larger lateral branch or the trunk, so the tree can seal its wounds and keep a natural shape. The ISA advises shortening a limb by cutting back to a lateral at least one-third the diameter of the limb being removed.

Our guide on [crown thinning, raising and reduction](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/crown-thinning-raising-reduction/) explains what each approach does. These practices follow ANSI A300, the pruning standard the industry uses.

## What if the tree really is too big?

Sometimes the honest answer is to remove it. The ISA notes that where a tree is too large for the site, removal and replacement with a more suitable species can be the better solution.

Battle Born does removal, including large and crane-assisted removal. Tree planting is not one of our services, but a nursery or landscaper can help with that.

## How do you spot a company that will top a tree?

It offers a price for cutting a tree back by a large amount with no description of which branches come off. Ask which branches will be cut, back to what, and why.

The ISA's topping brochure calls topping not an acceptable pruning technique. When you compare estimates, ask whether any cut in the scope is a topping cut.

Our [trimming cost guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-trimming-cost/) shows how to compare scopes.

## What does a good pruning estimate say?

It names the tree, the goal and the type of cuts, such as crown thinning, raising or reduction, and states how much live crown will be removed. It does not say 'top' or 'cut back to height'.

If an estimate is vague, ask for details. A company that welcomes the questions is usually one you can work with, and a certified arborist should be able to explain the plan. Our guide on [reading an estimate](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/how-to-read-a-tree-service-estimate/) can help.

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Is topping ever acceptable?

The ISA calls it not an acceptable pruning technique. For power-line clearance or a hazard, an arborist may recommend other methods.

### Will topping stop my tree growing?

It does not solve the size problem and triggers rapid regrowth, according to the ISA.

### Can a topped tree recover?

Sometimes, with careful pruning over time, and an arborist can tell you whether it is worth it.

### What does Battle Born do instead?

Trimming and pruning according to the tree, plus dead wooding, cabling and bracing, and removal when needed.

### Is shaping the same as topping?

Not always, but heavy shaping can have the same effect. Ask what is being cut.
