- Washoe Zephyr and downslope winds: preparing your trees

# How should you prepare your trees for Northern Nevada winds?

Have mature trees near your house looked at before wind season, prune out dead wood and hazards, avoid topping, and keep an eye on trees with cracks, lean or root damage. Wind does not cause defects, but it finds them.

Key takeaways

- Wind exposes weak spots: dead wood, cracks, decay, root damage.
- Topped and shaped trees regrow weak, which breaks in moderate wind, per NV Energy.
- Evergreens with dense crowns catch more wind and snow.
- Prune in the right season and ask for structure, not a haircut.
- After a wind event, look for hanging limbs and leaning trees.

Anyone who lives in the Truckee Meadows knows the afternoon wind locals call the Washoe Zephyr, and Sierra-front communities get strong downslope wind in storms. This guide covers how wind loads a tree and what you can do to reduce the risk.

## How common is wind risk here?

FEMA's National Risk Index, December 2025 version, rates county strong-wind risk as Relatively Moderate for Washoe County and Relatively Low for Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties. That is a county-level rating based on annualized frequency and consequences, so a windy pocket can still be worse than the county average.

Foothill and valley edge locations, ridgelines and Washoe Valley are often more exposed than the middle of town. The index is not a forecast for your yard.

## What makes a tree fail in wind?

A tree fails in wind where it is already weak: a split union, a rotten section, a broken root or a limb with too much weight. Dense crowns and large leaf area catch more wind, and wet soil makes roots hold less.

NV Energy's brochure explains that shaped trees regrow with vertical suckers that are weakly attached and break off even in moderate winds, creating windborne debris and power outages.

- Dead or hanging limbs.
- Cracks, splits and decay.
- Root damage from digging, paving or a changed grade.
- Heavy, one-sided crowns.
- Topped or shaped trees with weak regrowth.

## What can you do before wind season?

Have an arborist look at the largest trees near your house, power lines and parked cars. The usual fixes are pruning out dead wood, reducing weight on long limbs and supporting weak unions with cables or braces, or removing a tree that is too far gone.

Battle Born offers dead wooding, cabling and bracing, and trimming with free estimates. Pruning timing matters too, as our [timing guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/best-time-to-prune-trees-northern-nevada/) explains.

## What about trees near power lines in wind?

Branches that reach lines can arc or break them in wind. NV Energy says trees are a cause of power outages, including from branches rubbing lines and trees blown over in storms.

Do not trim near a line yourself. See [trees and power lines in NV Energy territory](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/trees-and-power-lines-nv-energy/) for who does what.

## What should you do after a wind storm?

Walk the yard from a safe distance and look for hanging limbs, new lean, heaved soil and anything on a wire. Keep people out from under damaged trees.

If anyone is hurt, call 911. If a power line is involved, stay away and call NV Energy. Then call Battle Born's 24-hour emergency line at [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243).

## Which trees deserve a second look first?

Start with the largest trees near the house, the ones over parking or play areas, and any tree that has dropped limbs before. Trees with old topping cuts, cracks or a lean should be near the top of the list.

Then look at trees near wires, since a failure there affects the neighborhood and not only your yard. Our service-area pages describe the elevation and fire exposure of each town, which can help you judge how exposed your street is.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Do evergreens or deciduous trees do better in wind?

It depends on the tree, its health and its site. An arborist can judge yours.

### Will thinning the crown reduce wind risk?

Proper thinning can reduce wind load, but heavy cutting does harm. The arborist decides how much.

### Is the Washoe Zephyr a danger to trees?

It is a regular afternoon wind. The bigger risk is a strong storm wind acting on a tree that already has a defect.

### Should I remove a tree before wind season?

Only an assessment can say. Removal is usual when a tree is dead or badly damaged.

### How do I schedule a check?
