# Trees, roofs and gutters: needles, branches and snow

Trees put needles, leaves and branches on your roof and in your gutters, and that debris is fuel in a wildfire and a drain blocker in a storm. Keep the roof and gutters swept, trim branches that reach the roof, and have an arborist look at limbs that hang over the house.

Key takeaways

- Carson City Fire Department asks owners to sweep gutters, eaves and the roof regularly, especially in hot, dry weather.
- The Living With Fire guide says to remove pine needles from the zone near the house each spring in pine-dominated areas.
- Trim branches within 10 feet of the home, chimney, deck or roof, and keep limbs from touching the roof.
- Heavy wet snow can break overhanging limbs. Snowfall varies a lot across our area.

Roof trouble from trees comes in three kinds: slow debris, fast branches and heavy snow. In our fire country, the slow kind matters more than most people think.

## Why does roof debris matter?

Carson City Fire Department's wildland fuels page tells owners to sweep gutters, eaves and the roof on a regular basis, especially during hot dry weather, and says tinder-dry leaves and needles are "a fire waiting to happen". The UNR Extension Living With Fire guide says that in wildfire events 60 to 90 percent of homes ignite from embers, and its ember-resistant zone asks you to remove dead leaves, pine needles and weeds near the house.

A gutter full of needles is also a gutter that does not drain. Both reasons point to the same chore.

## How often should I clear it?

The Living With Fire guide says to remove pine needles from the lean, clean and green zone each spring in pine-dominated ecosystems, because needles accumulate during the colder fall and winter months. Sweep again during the dry months. If you live under pines or firs, plan for more than one pass a year.

Do not climb a steep or snowy roof alone. If the roof is high, steep or wet, hire the cleanup.

## Which branches should come off?

The Living With Fire guide asks you to trim tree branches within 10 feet of the home, chimney, deck or roof, and within 10 feet of other trees. Beyond fire, branches that touch the roof scrape the surface and drop debris, and limbs that overhang the house are a hazard if they die or crack.

Have an ISA Certified Arborist look at any large limb over the roof. See [what an arborist checks](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-risk-assessment-what-arborists-check/) and [ladder fuels and limbing up](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/ladder-fuels-limbing-up/). Our [trimming and pruning](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/tree-trimming-pruning/) crews work over roofs with ropes or a boom truck.

## What about snow load on limbs?

NOAA's 1991-2020 normals show how different snowfall is across the area: about 14.0 inches a year at the Carson City station, 21.8 inches at Minden and 33.3 inches at the Reno 1.4 NNE station. Nevada-side Tahoe has no nearby snowfall station, and the Tahoe City station across the lake in California records 179.0 inches. More snow means more weight on limbs.

Read [heavy wet snow and broken limbs](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/heavy-snow-broken-limbs/) and [protecting trees from plow and snow-load damage](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/protecting-trees-from-plows-snow-load/). If a limb is on the roof or a line, stay out and call for help.

## When is it time to take the tree out?

If a tree is dead, hazardous or too close to the house to prune into a safe shape, removal is the answer. We use a crane or boom truck for trees over roofs. A certified arborist assesses every job before work begins. ## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### How close can a tree be to my roof?

The Living With Fire guide asks for branches within 10 feet of the home and roof to be trimmed, as a fire measure. Ask an arborist about your tree.

### Do I need to remove all the pine needles?

The guide asks for removal from the zone near the house, with attention in spring. Your fire district may have its own rules.

### Will gutter guards solve it?

They may help with leaves. Needles and fine debris can still build up. Fire agencies still ask for regular clearing.

### Who clears a roof after a storm?

A roofer or cleaning service can clear debris. If a limb is on the roof, a tree crew should remove it first.
