# Trees near pools, decks and patios

A tree next to a pool, deck or patio needs three checks: the limbs overhead, the roots underneath and, in our fire country, the space between the tree and the structure. Many are fixed by pruning, and removal is the answer when a tree is dead, hazardous or too close to correct.

Key takeaways

- Look up before you look down: dead limbs and cracks over a seating area are the first thing to report to an arborist.
- Roots commonly spread many times the width of the crown, so they can reach buried plumbing and paving.
- The Living With Fire guide asks for trimming branches within 10 feet of the home, chimney, deck or roof.
- Keep woodpiles, wood mulch and flammable plants out of the area under and around an attached deck.

Outdoor living space is where people stand under trees. That raises the stakes for any defect overhead, and it adds a fire question that most yards on the Sierra front have to answer.

## What overhead problems matter most?

The ISA's tree owner checklist is the right first pass: large dead branches, hanging or broken branches, loose bark, cracks or splits, cavities and mushrooms at the base. Over a patio or a deck, any of those deserve an arborist's look, because the people most likely to be hit are the ones sitting there.

Needles, leaves, seed and sap are a nuisance, not a hazard. Heavy dead wood is a hazard. If it is not clear which you have, read [how to tell if a tree is dead or dying](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/is-my-tree-dead-or-dying/) and [dead wooding](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/dead-wooding-explained/).

## What do roots do under hardscape and plumbing?

The ISA says roots commonly spread many times the breadth of the crown and can extend farther than the tree is tall. That reach is how roots get under patios, walkways and around underground lines. The ISA also notes that older degraded cement, clay or cast-iron pipes can leak, and moisture from the leaks attracts roots.

Do not cut large roots near a structure on your own. The decision about which roots can be removed without harming the tree belongs to an arborist. Our guides on [roots, sidewalks and sewer lines](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-roots-sidewalks-sewer-lines/) and [root barriers](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/do-root-barriers-work/) cover the options. A new pool is a large excavation, so ask an arborist about nearby trees before it is dug.

## What about fire safety next to the house?

The UNR Extension Living With Fire guide says that in wildfire events 60 to 90 percent of homes ignite from embers, so it asks for an ember-resistant zone from 0 to 5 feet that includes the area under and around any attached deck, with no woodpiles, wood mulch or flammable vegetation. In the next zone, to about 30 feet, it asks you to trim tree branches within 10 feet of the home, chimney, deck or roof and within 10 feet of other trees.

That makes a tree overhanging a wooden deck both a limb question and a fire question. See [what is defensible space](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/what-is-defensible-space/) and [ladder fuels and limbing up](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/ladder-fuels-limbing-up/).

## When is removal the answer?

The ISA says removal is recommended when a tree is dead, dying or irreparably hazardous, or is causing an obstruction or harming other trees in a way pruning cannot correct. For pools and patios that usually means a dead tree, a cracked trunk or a tree too close to the structure to prune into a safe shape.

Space matters. The ISA's placement guidance asks what clearance is needed for patios, sidewalks and driveways and how big the tree will be when full grown, so ask that about any tree you plan to keep or plant near a pool.

## How do we handle work near a pool or deck?

We prune, take down and haul away trees in tight yards with ropes, a crane or a boom truck when the pieces cannot be dropped. A certified arborist assesses the job first. Tell the office about the pool cover, equipment pad, deck and any fragile pavers when you call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). ## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Can I keep a tree that drops a lot of debris into my pool?

Often yes. Debris is a maintenance matter. The question for an arborist is whether the tree has a structural problem.

### Will tree roots break my pool?

Roots can reach underground plumbing and paving. Whether that is happening needs a site visit.

### Is it a fire problem to have a tree over my deck?

The Living With Fire guide asks for branches within 10 feet of a deck or roof to be trimmed. A tree overhanging a combustible deck is worth an arborist's opinion.

### Can you lift a tree out over a pool?

A crane can lift pieces over a pool or house so they do not need to be dropped. It depends on where the crane can stand.
