# How much does tree trimming cost?

Tree trimming cost depends on the height and spread of the tree, how much has to come off, how hard the crown is to reach and how much debris is hauled away. A small ornamental on a patio is a different job from a mature cottonwood over a driveway.

Key takeaways

- Size and access decide the crew and equipment.
- The goal of the pruning decides the scope: clearance, thinning, deadwood or structure.
- Heavy cutting back is not a bargain. Topping hurts trees.
- Cleanup, chipping and hauling should be named in the estimate.
- Late winter is the usual dormant window for most deciduous trees.

Prices change with the market, the season and the tree, so we do not publish them. This guide covers what drives a trimming estimate and how to tell a proper pruning plan from a quick haircut. Battle Born Tree Service gives free estimates for trimming, pruning and shaping.

## What factors affect the cost of trimming a tree?

The tree's size, its access, the purpose of the pruning and the amount of debris decide most of the cost. Reaching a tall crown from a bucket truck or by climbing takes a different crew than pruning a tree from the ground.

The goal matters too. Cleaning out dead wood, lifting branches off a roof, thinning a dense crown and building structure in a young tree are different jobs with different amounts of work. Say which one you want, and ask the estimator what they would recommend.

- Height and spread of the crown.
- Number and size of branches being removed.
- Access for climbers, a lift or a crane.
- Wires, roofs, fences and other things branches could hit.
- Whether debris is chipped, hauled or left.

## Is a cheaper trim always the better deal?

No. A low price can mean the crew is cutting too much, and cutting too much hurts the tree. The ISA says topping, which is cutting branches back to stubs, stresses the tree, opens wounds for decay and does not solve the height problem it is meant to fix.

ANSI A300, the pruning standard the industry follows, does not accept topping. Our guide on [why topping is not pruning](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/why-tree-topping-is-not-pruning/) gives the details. An arborist should be able to tell you which branches come off and why.

## When is the right time of year to trim?

Hazards and dead wood can be dealt with any time. Otherwise, Battle Born's guidance is to prune most deciduous trees in late winter while dormant, and most conifers in early spring and summer.

Our [timing guide for Northern Nevada](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/best-time-to-prune-trees-northern-nevada/) covers it in more depth.

## What should a trimming estimate spell out?

It should say which trees, what kind of pruning, how much will be removed and what happens to the debris. If the estimate only says 'trim tree', you cannot compare it to another.

Battle Born says its estimates are detailed and easy to understand, and tailored to each client. Ask for the same detail from every company.

- Which tree or trees, and where.
- The goal: clearance, deadwood, thinning, structure or shaping.
- The amount of live crown to be removed.
- Cleanup: chipping, hauling, wood left or taken.
- Who is on site and whether a certified arborist directed the work.

## What about trimming near a power line?

It involves the utility. NV Energy says the property owner is responsible for keeping trees clear of the service line to the house, and that attempting to prune or climb a tree near power lines can be dangerous.

Do not assume any crew can work next to a line. See [trees and power lines](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/trees-and-power-lines-nv-energy/).

## How do you prepare for a trimming visit?

Walk the property and note which trees you want looked at and why. Decide whether you want clearance from a roof or line, thinning for light, deadwood removal or structure for a young tree.

Take photos if you are calling from a distance, but expect that the estimate will be tied to a site visit. Battle Born estimates are free and tailored to each client.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Can I get a trimming price over the phone?

Rarely, and we do not give one. A quote without seeing the tree is a guess. Battle Born gives free estimates after looking at the work.

### Is it cheaper to trim often?

Regular, light pruning can mean less to remove each visit than an overgrown tree, but we will not promise savings. The arborist can suggest an interval for your tree.

### Does trimming include removing the cuttings?

It should be stated. Ask whether chipping and hauling are in the estimate.

### Will trimming make my tree safe?

No one can promise that. Pruning reduces specific risks such as dead branches, but only an assessment can tell you the condition of the whole tree.

### Should I trim a tree myself to save money?

Work from the ground with small hand tools is one thing. Climbing, ladders and saws overhead is where people get hurt. See our safety guides before you decide.
