- Tree leaning toward the house: what to check

# What should you do about a tree leaning toward your house?

A sudden lean, or a lean that is getting worse, is a reason to keep people away from the tree and call a tree service right away. A lean that has been there for many years can be stable, but only an arborist can tell the two apart.

Key takeaways

- A new or worsening lean is more worrying than an old curved trunk.
- Heaved soil, cracks near the base or lifted roots on the side away from the lean are red flags.
- Do not try to pull, prop or cut a leaning tree yourself.
- Keep people, cars and pets out of the area where it could land.
- If it is touching a wire, stay away and call NV Energy.

Many trees lean because they grew toward light, and some of them are fine for decades. The one to worry about is the straight trunk that tilts after a storm. This guide covers the signs to look at from a distance, and when to treat it as an emergency.

## How do you tell a new lean from an old one?

An old lean often shows a curved trunk, because the tree has grown upward from a tilted start, and the roots have adjusted over years. A newer lean tends to show a straight trunk tilted as a whole, and fresh signs of ground movement.

SavATree's guidance on leaning trees makes the same distinction: a long-established lean may be stable, while a sudden lean after a storm calls for prompt attention from a trained arborist. If you do not know how long the tree has leaned, treat it as unknown.

## What signs make a lean urgent?

Look from a safe distance for soil that has heaved or cracked on the side opposite the lean, roots lifting out of the ground, a split or crack in the trunk, fungus near the base and a lean that changes from one day to the next. Any of these means the root system may be failing.

If the tree is over a house, garage, play area or parked cars, do not wait for a better day.

- Soil mounded or cracked near the base.
- Roots lifting or snapped.
- Vertical cracks or splits in the trunk.
- Mushrooms or conks at the base.
- A lean that is increasing.
- Branches or the whole crown moved after wind or rain.

## Why can't you fix a leaning tree yourself?

Pulling, propping or cutting a heavy, loaded tree changes forces in ways that are hard to predict. People get hurt when a tree moves while they are under it.

NIOSH's study of tree care deaths from 1992 to 2007 found that being struck by an object, mostly a tree or branch, was the leading cause of death at 42 percent, ahead of falls and electrocutions. We do not give how-to steps for felling, rigging or chainsaw work for that reason.

## What can a tree service do about a leaning tree?

The arborist assesses the tree and what it could hit, then recommends removal, reduction or, for a sound tree, cabling or bracing. For a tree in a tight spot, a crane can lift pieces away without dropping them near the house.

Battle Born owns a crane and a 75-foot Altec boom truck, and offers cabling and bracing, crane-assisted removal and emergency service. Estimates are free. See [crane-assisted removal](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/crane-assisted-tree-removal/).

## What should you do right now?

Keep people and vehicles out of the fall zone, take photos from a safe distance, and call. If you can do it safely, note whether the soil or roots have moved.

If anyone is hurt, call 911. If a power line is involved, stay away and call NV Energy. Then call Battle Born's 24-hour emergency line at [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243).

- Move people and cars away from the tree and the area it could land.
- If a wire is involved, stay back and call NV Energy.
- Photograph the base and the lean from a distance.
- Call a tree service for an assessment.
- If it comes down on the house, read the first hour checklist.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### How much lean is too much?

There is no safe number you can judge by eye. Direction, change over time, soil movement and what is under the tree all matter. An arborist decides.

### Can a leaning tree be saved?

Sometimes, depending on root condition and species. The arborist will say if cabling, bracing or reduction is realistic.

### Will my insurance pay if it falls?

Often if a covered structure is damaged. See the homeowners insurance guide.

### Should I cut some branches off the lean side?

Do not start cutting a loaded tree yourself. Changing the weight can change how the tree moves.

### Who do I call?

For an emergency, call 911 if anyone is hurt, then NV Energy if a line is involved, then [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243).
