# How much does stump grinding cost?

Stump grinding cost depends mainly on the stump's diameter, the roots at the surface, how easily a grinder can reach it, how deep you want it ground and what happens to the chips. Any number quoted without seeing the stump is a guess.

Key takeaways

- Diameter and surface roots matter more than the height of the old tree.
- Fences, gates and slopes can limit which machine fits.
- Depth matters: ask how far below grade the grinding goes and what the spot will be used for.
- Chips and the hole left behind are part of the scope.
- Call 811 before any grinding below grade.

Stump grinding is priced by the stump, not by the tree that stood there. We do not publish prices, so this guide explains what moves the estimate and what to ask for. If the stump comes with a tree removal, ask whether it is in the estimate.

## What affects the cost of grinding a stump?

The main factors are stump diameter, the number of large roots above ground, access for the machine, and the depth you need. A wide stump with flaring roots holds more wood to grind than a narrow one.

Hidden material counts too. Rocks, old fence wire or concrete near the base can slow the work, and a crew may not see them until the grinder is running. That is one more reason a person should look at the stump before anyone names a figure.

- Stump diameter and height above ground.
- Surface roots and how far they spread.
- Access: a side gate, slope or tight yard decides which machine fits.
- Depth: shallow for a lawn patch, deeper for building or planting.
- Cleanup: chips left on site, hauled away or used to fill the hole.

## Is stump grinding included in a tree removal estimate?

Sometimes, but not by default. Battle Born's own site says all estimates are tailored to each client and their needs, so the answer is to ask and have it spelled out.

If you want the stump gone at the same visit, say so when the arborist looks at the tree. Our [grinding versus full stump removal guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/stump-grinding-vs-stump-removal/) explains the difference, and the [stump grinding service page](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/stump-grinding/) lists what the work covers.

## Why does 811 come before grinding?

A grinder cuts below the surface, and utility lines can be buried only inches down. 811 is the free national before-you-dig service, and it says every digging project, regardless of depth, requires contacting 811 a few days in advance.

Calling gets utilities to mark their lines so the work can avoid them. 811 says to allow a few business days for utilities to respond and to confirm all of them have before work starts. Read our short guide on [calling 811 before stump grinding](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/call-811-before-stump-grinding/).

## What should you ask each company before you accept a quote?

Ask the same questions of everyone, so the quotes can be compared. The answers show what is in the price and what is left for you.

A company that cannot say how the chips are handled or how deep the grinding goes has not defined the job yet.

- How deep below ground will the stump be ground?
- Are the surface roots included?
- What happens to the chips, and who removes extra?
- Will 811 be called, and who handles it?
- Is this stump quoted alone or with a removal?

## Can you plant or build where the stump was?

Often yes, but the ground is full of wood chips and loose soil, and the depth of the grinding decides what is practical. Tell the estimator what you plan so the depth fits the plan.

Our guide on [planting after stump grinding](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/planting-after-stump-grinding/) covers what to expect.

## What should you do before the crew arrives?

Mark sprinkler heads, drip lines and anything buried that you know about, and make sure the crew can get a machine to the stump. Move vehicles, furniture and play equipment out of the way.

Tell the estimator what you plan to do with the spot, such as lawn, planting or building, so the depth fits your plan. And confirm that 811 will be called.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Is stump grinding cheaper than stump removal?

It depends on the job and the method, and we will not compare prices without seeing the stump. Grinding leaves the roots below the surface to decay, while full removal digs them out. See the grinding versus removal guide.

### Do I need to be home for stump grinding?

Ask the company. Someone usually needs to confirm which stump is which and make sure gates are open. Underground lines must be marked first through 811.

### What happens to the wood chips?

That depends on the agreement. Chips can be left in the hole, raked into place or hauled off. Make it part of the estimate.

### Can any stump be ground?

Most can, but access and hidden objects decide. The arborist at the visit will tell you what is possible.

### Is stump grinding a Battle Born service?

Yes. Battle Born lists stump grinding and stump removal, and estimates are free.
