# How long do trees live in Northern Nevada?

It depends on the species and the site. The Forest Service reports Fremont cottonwood lifespans of more than 130 years, aboveground aspen stems in the West living up to about 150 years, and singleleaf pinyon often reaching 400 years. Yard trees rarely reach those ages, because people and construction shorten them.

Key takeaways

- Species have very different lifespans: decades for some, centuries for others.
- The ISA says the top five causes of tree death come from things people do, such as compaction, watering mistakes and planting the wrong tree.
- Age alone is not a reason to remove a tree; condition is.
- A tree that is declining or structurally unsound is a risk at any age.

"How old is my tree?" and "how much longer will it last?" are hard questions to answer from the driveway. These reported figures set the outer limits, and the stressors in your yard set the real answer.

## What lifespans does the Forest Service report?

The Forest Service's Fire Effects Information System is a species-by-species literature review. It reports these figures for three trees of our region, as written in the reviews.

| Tree | What the Forest Service reports |
|---|---|
| Fremont cottonwood | A lifespan of more than 130 years |
| Quaking aspen | Aboveground stems in the West may live up to 150 years; the clone itself can be much older |
| Singleleaf pinyon | Large trees on fire-safe sites can have a life span of 350 years or more; dominant trees are often 400 years old, and some reach 800 to 1,000 years |

These are maximums for trees in good conditions. They are not forecasts for a single yard tree. Our species pages cover [Fremont cottonwood](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/fremont-cottonwood/), [quaking aspen](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/quaking-aspen/) and [single-leaf pinyon](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/single-leaf-pinyon/).

## Why do yard trees die younger?

The ISA's tree selection brochure says the top five causes of tree death are things people do: soil compaction, under-watering, over-watering, vandalism and, number one, planting the wrong tree. Together these cause more tree deaths than all insects and diseases combined. It adds that soil in dense urban areas and new subdivisions is often disturbed, shallow, compacted and subject to drought.

Construction is another. The ISA says construction damage may take many years to show, and small injuries accumulating over time can start a decline that is hard to reverse. See [protecting trees during construction](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/protecting-trees-during-construction/).

## Does age mean a tree should come down?

Not by itself. The ISA says removal is recommended when a tree is dead, dying or irreparably hazardous, or when it is harming other trees in a way pruning cannot correct. A very old tree in good structure can be left, and a thirty-year-old tree with a failing trunk cannot. Condition is the test. Read [how to tell if a tree is dead or dying](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/is-my-tree-dead-or-dying/) and [what an arborist checks](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-risk-assessment-what-arborists-check/).

## What helps a tree last?

The ISA recommends regular inspection of mature trees, at least once a year, to catch changes in leaf size, twig growth and dieback early, plus appropriate mulching and pruning for a reason. Good structure from the early years matters too: see [young trees in new subdivisions](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/young-tree-care-new-subdivisions/). Give the roots room and keep machines off them.

Species choice is a lifespan decision. Our post on [which trees to plant in Reno and Carson City](https://battleborntreeservice.com/blog/best-trees-to-plant-reno-carson-city/) covers it.

## When should I call?

Call when you see dead wood, thinning crowns, cracks, mushrooms at the base or a new lean. A certified arborist can say what is going on. A certified arborist assesses every job before work begins. Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) for a free estimate.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### How can I tell how old my tree is?

Trunk size is only a rough guide, and growth rates vary by species and site. An arborist can estimate.

### Is there a lifespan figure for Siberian elm?

We did not find a sourced figure for every species, so we do not give one. See our species pages for what an arborist checks on each.

### Is an old tree always more dangerous?

No. The risk depends on condition and what is under the tree.

### Should I replace a declining tree before it dies?

Sometimes. Removal and replacement is a decision to make with an arborist.
