# How does crane-assisted tree removal work?

In a crane-assisted removal, a crane is set up on stable ground, a climber attaches the crane line to a section of the tree and makes the cut, and the crane operator holds the piece and moves it to a drop zone instead of letting it fall or be lowered through the branches.

Key takeaways

- The five steps: choose the crane set-up location, stabilize the crane with outriggers, attach the crane line at the cut point, cut while the operator holds the piece, move the piece to the drop zone.
- Set-up location depends on elevation, overhead obstacles and distance to structures.
- Battle Born says crane removal means less time and less impact on the surroundings than conventional rigging.
- A certified arborist assesses every job before work begins.
- Anyone hurt: 911. A line involved: stay away and call NV Energy.

Battle Born owns a crane, and crane-assisted removal is one of its listed services. This guide explains the sequence in the words the crew uses, why the planning step matters most, and where a crane is not the answer. It describes the job so you know what to expect. It is not a how-to.

## The sequence, step by step

- Choose the crane set-up location. Elevation, overhead obstacles and proximity to structures are all taken into account so the crane sits where it can reach the tree.
- Stabilize the crane. Outriggers and other equipment hold it steady.
- The climber attaches the crane line at the cut point on the tree.
- The climber makes the cut while the crane operator holds the piece.
- The operator moves the piece to the drop zone, where it is cut up and removed.

That is the five-step process Battle Born describes for its crane work. We do not publish technique beyond it, because rigging and cutting belong with trained crews.

## Why the plan comes first

The set-up decision drives everything else. A crane has to stand on ground that will carry it, with a clear path to the tree and room for the boom. Narrow streets, soft ground, fences and overhead wires all shape where it can go. The set-up location also decides where the drop zone is.

A certified arborist assesses every job before work begins. Battle Born Tree Service has two ISA Certified Arborists on staff, including ISA Certified Arborist WE-11728A. The assessment looks at the tree, the target under it and the access, and it decides whether a crane is the right tool.

## Why do crews choose a crane?

Battle Born describes the conventional alternative as complex rigging and lowering to avoid obstacles, which usually gives inferior results compared with the crane process. In the company's words, crane removal greatly reduces the time the job takes and decreases the impact on the surroundings, and it is a safe and efficient no-impact tree removal at a lower cost than traditional methods. That is the company's description of its own method, and we pass it on as such.

Practically, the crane takes the weight of each piece, so limbs and trunk sections are not dropped onto roofs, fences or landscaping. It suits large trees next to homes, trees over lawns and pools, and trees among wires and other obstacles.

## Wires and lines

Overhead lines change the plan. The International Society of Arboriculture notes that the lowest lines on a pole are often communication lines, above them are secondary lines carrying household voltage, then primary lines and transmission lines, and that higher lines carry more voltage and need more space. If your tree is in or near a line, stay away and call NV Energy. NV Energy handles its own primary lines. Battle Born offers utility and structure clearance as a service, and any work near lines starts with that conversation.

## Permits and approvals

A crane does not change who approves the removal. In the Nevada Tahoe Basin, TRPA requires a permit to remove live trees over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, with a dead tree that could fall on a house the exception. In Reno, trees in the City right-of-way need a Tree Work Permit. See [Northern Nevada tree removal permits](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-removal-permits-northern-nevada/) and the [Tahoe guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tahoe-tree-removal-permits-dbh/).

## What jobs is a crane not suited to?

A crane needs a place to stand. A back yard with no access from the street, a tree on a steep slope or a site with no ground that can hold the crane may be better served by a boom truck or a climbing crew. We compare the options in [crane vs climbing vs bucket truck](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/crane-vs-climbing-vs-bucket-truck/). ## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Can a crane remove a tree near my house?

That is one of the main reasons for using one. Battle Born says cranes can work near homes, wires and other obstacles. A certified arborist assesses the job first.

### Does the tree fall in a crane removal?

No. The crane operator holds each piece after the cut and moves it to the drop zone.

### Do you need a lot of space for a crane?

The crane needs a stable set-up location with a clear reach to the tree. The assessment decides whether the site has one.

### Is a crane removal faster?

Battle Born says crane removal greatly reduces the time compared with conventional rigging. The time for your job depends on the tree and the site.
