# Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal?

Sometimes: a policy often helps when a tree falls on a covered structure, and it usually pays little or nothing to remove a tree that fell without hitting anything. Your policy and your insurer decide, so read the terms and ask before work starts.

Key takeaways

- If a tree damages a structure, the insurer may cover repairs and debris removal, minus your deductible.
- If no structure was hit, you may pay for removal yourself.
- Removal payments are often capped at $500 or $1,000, according to the Insurance Information Institute as cited by Consumer Reports in 2019.
- Take photos and call your insurer before the debris is gone.
- Ask about wildfire and defensible space requirements separately.

This is general information, not insurance or legal advice. Policies differ, and your insurer or an attorney decides what applies to you. We cite Consumer Reports for the usual pattern.

## When does insurance pay for a fallen tree?

According to Consumer Reports, your insurer may cover repairs to a damaged house or detached garage plus debris removal, minus your deductible. That applies whether the tree was yours or came from a neighbor's yard.

The cause usually matters. Policies often name wind, ice and snow as covered events, so read the 'perils' section of your policy.

## What if the tree fell and hit nothing?

Then you will likely pay for removal and cleanup yourself. Consumer Reports says insurers may make an exception if the tree blocks a driveway or a disabled person's ramp.

Insurers generally cap what they pay to remove a tree at $500 or $1,000, according to the Insurance Information Institute as quoted in that 2019 article. Your own policy may differ, and the figure may have changed.

## What should you do first after a tree comes down?

Make sure people are safe, stay away from lines, then document and call your insurer. Photos of the tree, the damage and the property help the claim.

Our [first hour checklist](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-fell-on-house/) walks through it.

- Call 911 if anyone is hurt.
- Stay away from any wire and call NV Energy.
- Photograph the tree and damage from a safe place.
- Call your insurer before removal if you can.
- Then call a tree service.

## Does insurance cover removing a dead or diseased tree?

Preventive removal is generally not covered, because nothing has been damaged yet. Check your policy.

Consumer Reports quotes an attorney who says a carrier cannot disclaim for neglect when a diseased tree falls, but that is one lawyer's view in one article, so ask your insurer.

## Does the insurer care about trees near the house?

It can. Some insurers ask about trees near roofs and about wildfire defensible space in high-risk areas. Ask yours what it requires.

Our guide [on defensible space and insurance](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/insurance-and-defensible-space/) goes further.

## What should you read in your own policy?

Look at the sections on covered perils, debris removal, and any sublimit for tree removal, then check your deductible. Policies differ on whether a tree that falls on a fence, shed or driveway counts as a covered structure.

Call your agent before work starts and ask three things: is this event covered, what documentation do you need, and is there a cap on removal. Write down the answers and the name of the person who gave them.

## What if the tree has not fallen yet?

Insurance generally responds to damage, not to worry. A tree that looks dangerous but has not hit anything is usually your cost to deal with.

That is why an early assessment matters. If an arborist finds a real hazard, removing or supporting the tree is a decision about risk, and the cost is yours to weigh. Battle Born gives free estimates, so it costs nothing to ask.
