# What is dead wooding, and when does a tree need it?

Dead wooding is the removal of dead, dying, diseased or weakly attached branches from a tree's crown, also called crown cleaning. It can be done at any time of year, and it is the first thing an arborist does on most pruning jobs.

Key takeaways

- Dead wooding can be done at any time of year; the ISA says weak, dead and diseased limbs can be removed whenever.
- Dead branches are brittle. Whether they fall is a matter of when, not if.
- In winter, bare deciduous trees look dead. Check before you judge.
- At Lake Tahoe, dead branches are an exception to the upper two-thirds branch permit rule.
- If a hanging branch is over a person, a car or a line, stay clear and call.

Dead branches do not get better, and they do not stay up forever. Wind, snow or a hot afternoon brings them down onto roofs, cars and people. This guide covers how to spot dead wood, when it can come out, and where it goes after.

## What counts as dead wood

The ISA calls the removal of dead, dying, diseased, weakly attached and low-vigor branches cleaning. Dead wood includes branches with no live buds, bark that is peeling or loose, and stubs from earlier storm breaks. A branch can also be hanging, broken but still attached to the tree. Those are often called widow-makers, and we cover them in a separate guide on [hanging limbs after a wind storm](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/widow-makers-hanging-limbs/).

## When it can be done

Timing for ordinary pruning is a seasonal question. Dead wood is not. The ISA's guidance is that most light, routine pruning to remove weak, dead or diseased limbs can be done at any time of the year, and Battle Born's own guidance is the same: if a tree has dead branches or a hazard, prune at any time to remove it.

The best time to see dead wood in a summer-leafed tree is when it should be in leaf. A branch with no leaves in July is a good candidate. See [the best time to prune](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/best-time-to-prune-trees-northern-nevada/) for the dormant-season rules on everything else.

## Dead or dormant?

In winter, a healthy deciduous tree looks like a dead one. Scratching the bark of a small twig with a thumbnail and looking for green underneath is a common check, but it is not reliable on a large tree. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency makes the same distinction: a conifer counts as dead if it has no green needles, but a deciduous tree must be confirmed dead by a qualified forester.

If you are not sure, wait for spring leaf-out and look again, or ask an arborist to look. Waiting is low risk unless the limb hangs over something you cannot move.

## Why it matters in our climate

Dead wood is dry and brittle. Northern Nevada gets heavy wet snow and wind events that load the crown, and weak limbs are the first to go. Dead wood is also a fuel in a fire-prone yard. The same cleaning pass is part of reducing ladder fuels, which we cover in [ladder fuels and limbing up](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/ladder-fuels-limbing-up/).

## Lake Tahoe: the dead-branch exception

In the Nevada Tahoe Basin, a TRPA permit is required to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree's height. The exceptions include dead branches, branches within 10 feet of a chimney outlet, building or deck, and branches that rub or pull on utility lines on your property (talk to your power company first). Removing a dead tree that could fall on a house needs no TRPA permit. See our [Tahoe permit guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tahoe-tree-removal-permits-dbh/).

## What the work looks like

A certified arborist assesses the tree first. Battle Born Tree Service has two ISA Certified Arborists on staff, including ISA Certified Arborist WE-11728A. Dead wooding in a large tree means climbing or a lift, and the cut pieces are lowered or chipped, not dropped. We do not publish how-to steps for climbing or cutting, because the work belongs with trained crews. Our [dead wooding](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/dead-wooding/) page lists what is included, and the estimate is free.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### How do I know if a branch is dead?

Look for no leaves in the growing season, loose or peeling bark and brittle wood. In winter, a deciduous tree looks leafless either way, so wait for spring or ask an arborist.

### Does dead wooding hurt the tree?

Removing dead branches is the lightest form of pruning. The ISA says it can be done at any time of year with little effect on the tree.

### Can I remove a dead branch myself?

Small branches within reach, yes. Anything overhead, near wires or too big to control is work for trained crews with the right equipment.

### Is a permit needed for dead branches at Tahoe?

Dead branches are an exception to TRPA's upper two-thirds branch permit rule. Confirm with TRPA if the situation is unclear.
