# What is woundwood?

Woundwood is the ring of new wood and bark that a tree grows around the edge of a wound, such as a pruning cut, a broken limb or a scar. Over seasons it rolls inward to cover the exposed wood.

## How it forms

The cambium at the wound's edge makes thicker, rounder tissue than normal, and the ring grows toward the centre of the wound. On a good cut, made just outside the [branch collar](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/branch-collar/), the ring closes evenly all round. It covers the wound but does not heal what is under it; the wood below stays damaged and the tree walls it off. See [CODIT](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/codit/).

Closing takes years on a large cut, and the rate depends on the species, the age and vigour of the tree, and the size and shape of the wound.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Slow-growing trees on a few inches of rain seal wounds slowly. A big cut on a stressed tree may never close, and a decayed spot is the likely result. Closure rates differ by species, and that is a reason to take fewer, smaller cuts and to avoid large cuts where possible.

Wound dressing, sealant or paint on pruning cuts is not recommended by current arboricultural guidance; the tree does not need it and it can trap moisture. Cut well, time the work and let the tree seal itself. See [best time to prune in Northern Nevada](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/best-time-to-prune-trees-northern-nevada/).

## What an arborist does about it

The arborist checks the woundwood on old cuts. A ring that is even and growing shows a tree that is coping; a ring that is one-sided, cracked or absent shows a wound that is not closing. Poor closure on a main limb is a reason to look for decay, and sometimes to reduce the limb's weight. Dead wood is cut at any time of year; other pruning is timed for dormancy. Battle Born's arborists follow the same schedule their own FAQ gives: late winter for most deciduous trees, and early spring and summer for most conifers.
