# What is temperature inversion?

A temperature inversion is a condition in which air near the ground is colder than the air above it, the reverse of the usual pattern. Cold air, and anything in it such as wood smoke, sits in the valley instead of mixing upward.

## What happens

Normally air cools as you go up. On a clear, calm night the ground loses heat, the air next to it chills, and the cold air drains downhill and pools in low places. Warmer air rides over the top like a lid, and the valley fills like a bowl.

The effect is strongest in winter, with long nights and little wind. It can last for days until a storm or wind stirs the air.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

The Truckee Meadows, Carson Valley and Washoe Valley are bowls ringed by mountains, so inversions hold smoke from stoves and fireplaces and bring burn restrictions on bad days (see [EPA-certified wood stove](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/epa-certified-wood-stove/) and [Washoe County burn codes explained](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/washoe-county-burn-codes/)). For trees, pools of cold air mean that low spots get colder than the slopes above. A late frost can nip new growth in a hollow while a lot a hundred feet higher is fine. The elevation and hardiness zone data are on [elevation and hardiness zones](https://battleborntreeservice.com/data/elevation-and-hardiness-zones/).

## What an arborist does about it

We use it when we look at a tree with frost-killed shoots or spring dieback that follows a certain slope or low corner of a yard. If the damaged wood is dead, pruning removes it; if the whole tree is dead, removal. We do not make weather claims for a specific lot. Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) for a visit. See [dead wooding](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/dead-wooding/).

For the home, it also explains why the high side of a yard can be several degrees warmer on a still winter night. Notes on which corner frosts first are useful when picking where cold-tender trees do well.
