# What is slash?

Slash is the leftover limbs, treetops, branches and brush that remain on the ground after trees are cut or vegetation is cleared. Left in a pile it dries out and becomes wildfire fuel.

## Why it matters

Cutting a tree or clearing brush does not remove the fuel; it moves it to the ground. A heap of dry limbs next to a home is a bigger hazard than the standing brush it replaced, because it is dense, dry and close to the ground where embers land. The Living With Fire guidance behind our defensible space work is to remove, not pile, what is cut.

Fine slash and large slash behave differently, and agencies set their own rules for piles, burning and drop-off. Never assume a burn pile is allowed; Washoe County's burn code, for instance, runs by colour through winter.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

The region has a short wet season and a long dry one, and fire districts hold chipping programs and free defensible space evaluations to keep slash from piling up. See [free defensible space evaluations and chipping programs](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/free-defensible-space-evaluations-chipping/).

Slash also accumulates after storms and after pine bark beetle kills, which bring down large volumes of dry wood. See [removing dead pines after bark beetles](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/removing-dead-pines-bark-beetles/).

## How slash is handled

There are three common routes. Limbs go through a chipper, and the chips are used or hauled. Standing brush is masticated, which grinds it into chips left on the ground. Larger pieces are cut up and hauled away or used as firewood. Which route fits depends on volume, access and whether chips are safe to leave near a house; see [free wood chips: uses and limits](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/free-wood-chips-uses-limits/).

Battle Born owns a chipper, a chip truck, dump trucks, a masticating head and loaders, and debris collection and disposal is part of its storm clean-up work. When you ask for an estimate, ask what happens to the wood and brush.
