# What is removal cut?

A removal cut is a pruning cut that takes a whole branch off at its point of attachment, just outside the branch collar. It is the cut used when a limb should go entirely, as opposed to being shortened.

## What makes it a removal cut

The cut is placed at the limb's origin, either at the trunk or at a larger parent branch. It leaves the [branch collar](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/branch-collar/) and the [branch bark ridge](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/branch-bark-ridge/) intact so the tree can wall off the wound and grow woundwood over it. It does not leave a stub, and it does not slice into the trunk.

Large limbs are taken in stages so the weight does not tear the bark down the trunk. That is a technique of the crew in the tree and is not something to attempt from a ladder.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Dead, broken, rubbing and crossing limbs are the common reasons for a removal cut here, and so are branches that hang over roofs, driveways or service lines. Late winter is when many deciduous trees are pruned, while hazards and dead wood can go at any time. See [the best time to prune in Northern Nevada](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/best-time-to-prune-trees-northern-nevada/).

A wound cut well closes over time. A flush cut or a stub leaves a bigger opening or a dead end, and both invite decay.

## What an arborist does about it

The arborist chooses removal cuts to take out whole limbs and reduction cuts to shorten others, then plans which limbs to take so that no more than the tree can afford comes off in one visit. Battle Born's certified arborist assesses each job before work begins, and the estimate says which limbs are coming off and why. See [tree trimming and pruning](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/tree-trimming-pruning/).

When you read an estimate, a line that says remove a limb means a removal cut, and a line that says reduce or shorten a limb means a reduction cut. If the wording is unclear, ask which one the arborist means.
