# What are outriggers?

Outriggers are the extendable legs or beams that a crane or boom truck sets out to the side and down onto the ground before it lifts, so the machine stays steady under load. Without them a loaded boom could tip the truck.

## Why they matter on a tree job

A crane's lifting ability depends on being level and on the ground under the outriggers holding the weight. That makes the site part of the plan. Soft soil, a lawn over a sprinkler line, a slope, a septic area or a driveway of thin paving all affect where the outriggers can go. The pads under the legs spread the load, and the operator watches the ground as the lift proceeds.

Space matters too. Outriggers extend sideways, so a machine needs more room than its width on the road. A tight street or a gate can limit where a truck can stand, which is why the assessment includes looking at where it can set up. We do not publish dimensions, because they depend on the unit and the site, and the arborist who looks at the site gives the answer.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Hillside lots in Caughlin Ranch, Washoe Valley, Genoa and the west side of Carson City mean slopes and rock; valley lots mean irrigated lawns with buried lines. Winter adds frozen ground and ice. Each of these changes how a machine can be set. Underground lines are another reason to call 811 before work that disturbs ground.

## How Battle Born uses the term

Crane-assisted removal and work from the 75-foot Altec GMC boom truck both begin with positioning the machine. The arborist who assesses the job considers access and ground, and the crew explains the plan at the estimate. Crane work often replaces heavy machinery driven across the yard, which is part of why it can reduce the impact on the property.
