# What is lion-tailing?

Lion-tailing is the removal of most or all of the inner and lower side branches along a limb so that foliage is left in a tuft at the end, like the tail of a lion. It is not accepted pruning practice, because it moves weight to the end of the limb and invites failure.

## How to recognise it

Look along the limbs of a tree after a heavy-handed trim. Bare stems run out for several feet with a clump of leaves or needles at the tip. The cuts were probably sold as thinning, but thinning keeps leaf-bearing branches distributed along the limb.

The shape is easy to spot on pines and on shade trees that have had every inner branch cut off in the name of 'cleaning up'.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Wind and snow load turn long leveraged limbs into levers. A limb with all its weight at the tip bends and snaps more easily in a Washoe Zephyr gust or a wet spring snow, and it sprouts weak shoots along its bare stem. The tree also loses leaf area close to the trunk, where it makes the most food. See [heavy wet snow and broken limbs](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/heavy-snow-broken-limbs/).

A lion-tailed limb cannot be put back. Fixing it takes years of restoration or removal of the limb.

## What an arborist does about it

Proper crown thinning removes selected branches evenly through the crown, and the ISA's Pruning Mature Trees brochure says no more than 25% of the crown should generally be removed at once, and leaves interior foliage in place. Reduction and end-weight work (see [end-weight reduction](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/end-weight-reduction/)) do the opposite of lion-tailing and move weight back toward the trunk. Battle Born's arborists follow the ANSI A300 pruning standard. If a past trim left your tree this way, ask for an arborist consultation.

If a quote offers to thin out the inside so the tree looks open or lets in light, ask how much foliage stays along each limb. A good answer describes even thinning across the crown and a share of leaf area left untouched.
