# What is fuel break?

A fuel break is a strip or block of land where trees, brush and other fuels have been thinned or removed to slow the spread of a wildfire and give firefighters a place to work. It does not stop a fire by itself, but it changes how a fire behaves when it reaches the strip.

## What it is

A fuel break can be a mowed or masticated strip along a ridge, road or subdivision edge, or a thinned stand of trees with the lower branches and brush removed. The work thins the vegetation and breaks up the continuous path of fuel (see [fuel load](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/fuel-load/)) that lets a fire run from the ground into the trees.

It is bigger-scale than the work around a single house, and it is usually planned by a fire agency, a district or a landowner group rather than one homeowner.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

The valleys and foothills of Washoe, Carson, Douglas and Lyon counties are full of continuous brush and grass, and large fires have burned near the places we serve. The National Interagency Fire Center keeps the perimeters of those fires. See [large wildfires since 1980](https://battleborntreeservice.com/data/large-wildfires-since-1980/).

Where a lot is large, a fuel break along the edge of the property, or between the house and the wildland, is part of the answer. Mowing and mastication are the usual tools. See [mastication vs brush mowing vs hand clearing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/mastication-vs-brush-mowing-vs-hand-clearing/).

## What an arborist does about it

Battle Born does the machine work for fuel reduction with its own equipment: brush mowing, masticating and lot clearing, along with hand work in tight places. The arborist walks the lot with you to mark what stays and what goes. See [masticating](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/masticating/) and [brush mowing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/brush-mowing/).

On a single lot, a fuel break shows up as a mowed or masticated band along the property edge or between the house and the wildland side. The arborist and the owner agree on its width and on which trees stay inside it.
