# What is fire-adapted community?

A fire-adapted community is a neighborhood or town whose residents and local agencies take steps together to cut wildfire risk, so that homes can survive a fire without heroic firefighting. It rests on each property doing its part and the neighbors doing theirs.

## What it involves

The pieces are the same wherever the idea is used: homes prepared by their owners, fuel reduced on shared land and along roads, evacuation plans, and agencies and neighbors who talk to each other. Fire spreads across lot lines, so one clear yard beside two untouched ones does less than three clear yards.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Our neighborhoods at the wildland edge include the west side of Carson City, Washoe Valley, the Carson Range foothills, Dayton and the Nevada side of Tahoe. The USDA Forest Service's Wildfire Risk to Communities data ranks many of these places above most US communities. A whole street that keeps its trees lifted and its brush mowed is safer than a single clear lot. HOAs and property managers can organize the work for a whole property or a whole group of homes.

## What an arborist does about it

A good first step for an HOA or a street is a joint walk-through, so every owner sees the same list. Boards that want a common-area plan can ask the arborist for one written plan for the whole property.
