# What is an EPA-certified wood stove?

An EPA-certified wood stove is a wood heater that has been tested and approved under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rules to meet limits on particle smoke. Certified stoves carry a permanent label and burn cleaner than old uncertified ones, but only if they are fed dry wood.

## What the certification means

Federal rules require new wood heaters to meet an emission standard and to be tested before sale. The approved stove carries a label with its model and certification details. Older stoves made before the rules do not have the label. Cleaner burning uses less wood for the same heat and puts out less smoke.

How well any stove performs depends on the fuel: wood that is seasoned burns far cleaner than green wood. See [how to season and stack firewood](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/how-to-season-and-stack-firewood/).

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Wood heat is most common in rural towns such as Palomino Valley, Virginia City and Topaz Ranch Estates (ACS 2020-2024). The ACS counts of wood-heated households are on the [wood heat households](https://battleborntreeservice.com/data/wood-heat-households/) data page. Winter inversions (see [temperature inversion](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/temperature-inversion/)) trap smoke in the valleys, and local burn codes set rules for stoves and fireplaces on some days. See [Washoe County burn codes explained](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/washoe-county-burn-codes/).

Check your own county or fire district for stove rules before you buy or replace one.

## What an arborist does about it

Battle Born does not sell, install or inspect stoves. We do tree work and sell firewood and wood chips; call the office at [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) for availability and pricing. Whatever the source, ask whether the wood is seasoned. Keep the stack away from the house, as the Living With Fire guide advises. See [firewood and wood chips](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/firewood-wood-chips/).

When you buy wood for a stove, ask when it was cut and split, and check it with a moisture meter if you own one. Seasoned wood sounds hollow when two pieces are knocked together, and its ends show cracks.

If you are unsure whether your stove is certified, look for the permanent label on the back or the side. The maker, the model and the year are usually on it, and the dealer or the county can tell you what applies.
