# What is end-weight reduction?

End-weight reduction is pruning that removes some of the smaller branches and foliage at the outer end of a long or heavy limb, so less weight sits far from the trunk. It lowers the leverage on the limb and on the union where it attaches.

## How it works

A horizontal limb with a lot of foliage at its tip acts like a lever on its attachment point. Lightening the tip, usually by [reduction cuts](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/reduction-cut/) to lateral branches, shortens the lever and reduces how much the limb swings in wind. The aim is to keep a balanced limb with foliage along its length.

It is not [lion-tailing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/lion-tailing/). The work takes weight from the end but leaves inner branches that carry the tree's food-making leaves, and it does not strip the limb bare.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Long limbs over roofs, fences and driveways are everywhere in the older neighborhoods of Reno and Carson City, and so are heavy wet snows and gusts off the Sierra. A limb that is sound but overextended may be better lightened than lost, and the work can be paired with [codominant stems](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/codominant-stems/) that need relief or with cabling. See [cabling and bracing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-cabling-bracing-explained/).

If the limb has decay at its base, a crack or included bark, lightening it will not be enough.

## What an arborist does about it

The arborist looks at where the limb attaches, whether there is a crack, a cavity or [included bark](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/included-bark/), and what is underneath, then picks the lightest fix that fits. For a sound limb that means selective end-weight reduction. For a limb that cannot be made safe the answer is removal. A certified arborist assesses every job at Battle Born before work begins.

It also works as a bridge. A tree with a sound but overextended limb can be lightened this season and checked again after the next big storm, while the owner decides whether anything bigger is needed.
