# What is a drop zone?

A drop zone is the cleared area where cut pieces of a tree are set down or allowed to land during removal. On a crane job it is the place the crane sets each section down before it is cut up and loaded.

## What goes into a drop zone

A good drop zone is big enough for the pieces, clear of people, pets, vehicles, wires and anything breakable, and reachable by the crew and the chipper or truck that follows. It is marked off, and nobody who is not part of the crew enters it while work is going on. The same idea, a clear area where something may fall, applies to pruning from above.

On a lot where there is no open space, the drop zone may be the driveway, the street, the roof of a structure that has been protected, or a spot beyond the fence that the crane can reach. Choosing it is part of planning the job.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Lots with large old trees are full of obstacles: cottonwoods near fences and sheds, pines leaning over rooflines on the Carson Range side, and trees in HOAs where the neighbours' yards are only a few feet away. Planning the zone before work decides whether the wood goes over a wall or through a gate. See [HOA tree rules](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/hoa-tree-rules/) for approval steps.

On the public side, a drop zone in a street or sidewalk means the right-of-way, and rules apply. See [right-of-way](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/right-of-way/).

## How Battle Born uses it

When a crane is used, the sections are lifted away to a cleared drop zone rather than lowered by hand, and the crew clears and cuts the wood there. The arborist at the estimate looks at where that zone can be. If you can move cars, furniture or garden items before the crew arrives, ask the office what to clear. The crew will tell you what they need.
