# What is the drip line?

The drip line is the line on the ground directly under the outermost branch tips of a tree, where rain would drip off the crown. It is a handy way to talk about the space around a tree, but the roots do not stop there.

## What the drip line is good for, and where it misleads

People often protect the drip line and assume the roots end at it. Roots usually reach well beyond it, and the ones that take up most water and nutrients sit in the top foot or so of soil, spread over a wide area. A tree with a narrow crown, such as a Lombardy poplar, can have roots that extend far beyond a drip line only a few feet wide. See [Lombardy poplar](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/lombardy-poplar/).

For work near a tree, arborists use the [critical root zone](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/critical-root-zone/) and the [structural root zone](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/structural-root-zone/), which are tied to trunk size, not to the crown. The drip line is an easy first marker for owners.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Irrigation is how valley trees get through a summer with only a few inches of rain, and where water goes matters. A sprinkler system that wets the lawn and trunk but not the root area may leave a tree dry, and a trench for a sprinkler line or a new fence run inside the drip line can cut roots. See [watering mature trees in the high desert](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/watering-mature-trees-high-desert/).

The same applies to storage and parking. Heavy vehicles and piles of material compact the soil beneath a crown and damage what the tree needs.

## What an arborist does about it

Before construction, grading, trenching or a pool, the arborist marks a protection area based on the trunk and the species, not on the drip line alone, and asks where the digging will go. When a project must cross the area, roots are cut cleanly by hand or by air tools rather than ripped by a backhoe. Call 811 before any trench.
