# What is crown cleaning?

Crown cleaning is pruning that removes only the dead, dying, diseased, broken and rubbing branches from a tree's crown, leaving its size and shape as they were. In ANSI A300 language it is one of the named pruning types, alongside crown thinning, raising and reduction.

## How it differs from the other crown pruning types

The easiest test is whether the tree looks smaller afterward. After crown cleaning it should not. Thinning removes live branches to let wind and light through, raising lifts the lowest limbs for clearance, and reduction shortens the whole tree. Cleaning takes out only what is already failing. The result is a tree that looks like itself with the hazards gone. The [dead wooding](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/dead-wooding/) service is the same idea in everyday words.

Cleaning also covers branches that rub against each other, because two limbs wearing a wound in each other will eventually give decay a way in.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Dead wood hangs in the crowns of drought-stressed trees across the valleys, and our winds and wet spring snow turn it into falling debris. Cottonwoods and old Siberian elms are classic examples: big crowns, brittle dead limbs, and often a roof or a parked car underneath. See [the Fremont cottonwood guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/fremont-cottonwood/) and [Siberian elm](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/siberian-elm/).

Dead and hazardous wood can be removed at any time of year, which is why storm season and the weeks after are common times for a cleaning visit. Because it takes out only what is failing, cleaning is also the gentlest pruning a mature tree can get. Live pruning is better timed for dormancy: late winter for most deciduous trees, and early spring or summer for most conifers.

## What the arborist does

The arborist looks over the whole crown first, from the ground and then from within the tree, because deadwood is easy to miss against sky. Branches that are dead but sound and small are removed at the [branch collar](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/branch-collar/); large dead limbs over a structure are sometimes lowered in pieces under control. If the cleaning shows that the trunk itself is failing, the conversation moves from pruning to the tree's future.
