# What is the critical root zone?

The critical root zone, or CRZ, is the area of ground around a tree that holds enough roots to keep it alive and stable. Digging, grading, paving or parking inside it can harm or kill the tree, so arborists mark it off before construction.

## How it is set

It is usually figured from the diameter of the trunk and adjusted for species, age, soil and the tree's condition, and it is bigger than most people expect. It is not the [drip line](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/drip-line/), which only follows the crown, and it is more than the [structural root zone](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/structural-root-zone/), which is the smaller area that anchors the tree. We do not publish a formula here, because arborists use different methods and the project arborist sets it for the actual tree.

Inside the zone, the things that harm are cutting roots, compacting soil, changing the grade and spilling chemicals or concrete wash.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

Lot clearing and building in Lyon and Douglas counties, pools and additions in Carson City, and utility trenches everywhere bring heavy machinery to trees that have to be kept. A mature cottonwood, pine or elm that has stood for decades can decline within a season of damage and not show it until the following year. See [lot clearing before building](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/lot-clearing-before-building/).

Trees in older neighbourhoods, where roughly half of the homes in places like Carson City were built before 1980, are the likeliest to have large roots running under paving and under yards that are being redone.

## What an arborist does about it

The arborist walks the site with the plans, marks the protection area, and recommends fencing, ground covering and hand digging near roots. Where the work cannot avoid the zone, roots are exposed and cut cleanly instead of torn. See [root pruning](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/root-pruning/). If a tree cannot survive the plan, the honest answer is to say so before work starts. Battle Born's arborist consultation includes this kind of assessment.
