# What is crane pick?

A crane pick is one lift of a crane: the cut piece of tree is attached to the hook, the crane takes its weight, and the operator lifts it clear and sets it in the drop zone. A tree removal by crane is a series of picks, one for each section.

## How a pick goes

On Battle Born's crane jobs, as the company describes them, the crane is set up with its outriggers out (see [outriggers](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/outriggers/)), the climber attaches the crane at the cut point, the operator holds the weight, and the piece is cut free and flown to the [drop zone](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/drop-zone/). Then the next section is picked. The pieces are cut in sizes that the crane's rating and reach can handle.

That sequence is described in more detail in [how crane-assisted removal works](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/how-crane-tree-removal-works/).

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

A crane pick takes the weight of the wood off the tree and off the ground while the cut is made, so a large cottonwood or pine near a house comes down without swinging or crashing. Battle Born's own description is a safe and efficient no-impact tree removal that works near homes, wires and other obstacles. A pick still depends on access for the crane and firm ground for its outriggers.

The size of a pick is a matter of crane rating, reach and the weight of the wood, and the arborist works those out at the site. We do not publish crane specifications here.

## What an arborist does about it

The arborist plans the picks before the day: where the crane sits, how far it must reach, which sections are cut and where each goes. Rigging and lifting follow ANSI Z133 safety practice. The estimate tells you whether your tree is a candidate; call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). See [crane-assisted tree removal](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/crane-assisted-tree-removal/).

For you, the practical points are a clear spot on firm ground for the crane, a drop zone for the wood, and no one standing in either. The arborist walks the site with you beforehand and explains where each will be.
