# What is alkaline soil?

Alkaline soil is soil with a pH above 7. Much of the soil in the arid West is alkaline, and a high pH can lock up iron and other nutrients so that some trees turn yellow even when the nutrients are present in the ground.

## What it is

Soil pH is a scale of acidity from 0 to 14, with 7 neutral. Where rainfall is low, the lime and salts in the soil are not washed away and pH stays high. Tap water in the region can add to it over the years.

Yellow leaves with green veins, called chlorosis, are the classic sign of iron the tree cannot use. Maples, birches, pin oaks and some others are known for it.

## Why it matters in Northern Nevada

The Cooperative Extension landscape guide for the high desert covers our soils, which are often alkaline and sometimes salty and shallow over a hard layer (see [caliche](https://battleborntreeservice.com/glossary/caliche/)). Species that suit high-pH ground handle it; those from acidic, wet regions struggle. Yellowing is not always a soil problem, though. Water stress, root damage and disease give similar leaves. See [drought stress and dieback](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/drought-stress-and-dieback/).

## What an arborist does about it

The arborist reads the pattern: which species, which part of the tree, how the roots sit and what the watering has been. We do not offer soil amendment, fertilizing or treatments. If a tree has declined for good, the answer is removal or pruning out the dead wood, and the arborist will say so. For soil testing and what grows well in high-pH soils, Cooperative Extension is the place to ask. See [arborist consultation](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/arborist-consultation/).

When the arborist asks about the species of the tree, how long it has been in the ground and how the yard is watered, those answers help sort a soil problem from a water or root problem.

A soil test through Cooperative Extension or a lab gives a number for pH and salts. It takes the guesswork out, and it helps explain a tree that has done poorly for years.
