# Carson City Fire Department: defensible space and trees

The Carson City Fire Department runs the Wildland Fuels Reduction program, started in summer 2006 to help homeowners in the city's wildland-urban interface create defensible space. It offers a free dumpster or trailer for dead vegetation to eligible homes, and the state lists the department for defensible space inspection requests.

## What the district offers residents

- **Wildland Fuels Reduction:** The department says the program was established in summer 2006 to help homeowners in the city's wildland-urban interface communities provide defensible space on their property. Creating defensible space is described as a key element of reducing the threat and effects of a wildland fire.

- **Free dumpster or trailer:** If you are within the wildland-urban interface and outside the green line on the city's MapGeo tool, you can reserve a trailer or dumpster at no cost, provided through Bureau of Land Management grants. The material must be vegetative waste only: no construction or man-made materials and no bags. Pine needles are allowed, with little dirt. Trailers are 7 by 12 by 8 feet and the dumpster is 22 cubic yards.

- **Safety zone guidance:** The department says that in most areas a safety zone should be cleared for no less than 30 feet from the home, and as far as 100 feet as the slope of the lot increases. It also asks owners to sweep gutters, eaves and the roof regularly and to stack firewood well away from combustible things.

- **Inspection requests:** Fire Adapted Nevada's contacts page lists the Carson City Fire Department for defensible space inspection requests by email, with "Defensible Space Inspection" as the subject line.

## Towns in this district

| Town | Wildfire risk to homes (US percentile) | Buildings directly exposed | Mapped fires within about 10 miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carson City | 98.5% | 10.3% | 17 |
| West Carson City | no own record (see the county) | not published | 17 |
| North Carson City | no own record (see the county) | not published | 21 |

Sources: USDA Forest Service, Wildfire Risk to Communities (April 2026); NIFC fire perimeters of 300+ acres since 1980, centers within about 10 miles of the town point.

Carson City is our home yard, and the USFS data is blunt: the USFS rates its risk to homes higher than 98.5 percent of US communities. Here is what the fire department publishes for homeowners.

## What do the numbers say for Carson City?

The USFS Wildfire Risk to Communities data rates Carson City's risk to homes higher than 98.5 percent of US communities, with 10.3 percent of its 22,496 buildings in the direct-exposure zone. West Carson City (ZIP 89703) and North Carson City (ZIP 89706) have no USFS record of their own, so the city figure applies. Median year built is about 1981 in the city and 1980 in West Carson City.

Mapped fires of 300 acres or more with centers within about 10 miles of the city include Waterfall (2004, 8,765 acres), Linehan (2006, 5,863 acres) and Little Valley (1981, 5,142 acres). Davis (2024, 5,824 acres) is mapped near North Carson City. Those are mapped acres only.

## What rules apply to trees?

We found no private-property tree removal permit in Carson City. For trees in the right-of-way, check with Carson City Public Works before work. Fire department guidance is about vegetation near the home, not a permit for each tree. See [the defensible space checklist for Carson City's west side](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/defensible-space-checklist-carson-city/) and [permits in Northern Nevada](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tree-removal-permits-northern-nevada/).

## What does Battle Born do in Carson City?

Our yard is at 6301 US Highway 50 East in Carson City, about 8 minutes from the city center without traffic. We do defensible space and fire mitigation, lot clearing, brush mowing, masticating, trimming and limbing up, and removal of dead and hazardous trees, with a certified arborist assessing each job. The free dumpster program covers vegetative waste only, so ask us what haul-off we include in the estimate. Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) for a free estimate.
