# Can you take down part of a tree instead of the whole thing?

Often yes. If the problem is one limb, one stem or the tree's size, a certified arborist may be able to prune it, reduce it or take out the failing part. If the trunk or roots are the problem, removing only part will not fix it.

## When part of a tree is the answer

A dead or broken limb, a branch over the roof, or a branch pushing into a wire can be removed without losing the tree. Where a tree is too wide or tall for its spot, the industry standard is reduction, which shortens a stem by cutting back to a side branch large enough to take over. ISA says reduction should cut back to secondary branches at least one-third the diameter of the cut stem, which keeps the tree's form and structure.

Our site also lists dead wooding, which takes out dead branches without changing the shape of the tree.

## When it is not

If the trunk is cracked or hollow, if there is decay at the base, or if the roots are lifting or severed, taking off branches does not help; it can even load the tree unevenly. A tree that leans and has moved soil is a different case from a tree with one bad limb. Topping, which cuts a tree back to stubs, is not pruning and is not a way to take part of a tree down. See [why topping is not pruning](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/why-tree-topping-is-not-pruning/).

## How we decide

A certified arborist assesses the tree and the site before work begins, and the estimate is free. Tell the office what you want the tree to do: stop shading the roof, clear the wires, stop dropping limbs. The arborist will say whether pruning, reduction or removal gets you there. We never tell someone by phone that a tree is safe, because that takes a person looking at it.

Ask the arborist to explain the choice in plain words and to tell you what will be left. A tree that has been cut back hard can be left lopsided or weak, and a tree that has lost its main leader may never recover its shape. If the honest answer is that the whole tree should come down, the arborist should say why: which sign decided it, and what the tree could hit. You can ask for a second look before you agree.
